    Hi all

Next weekend, I'm going to have a couple of days spare in Bristol, and was wondering about nearby attractions that would make a pleasant couple of days.

    A few conditions:

    1) They need to be daddy-friendly, but also OK for my daughter (aged three). She's interested in railways, but anything that involves large amounts of traipsing around, either to get to or when there is probably out. But a train ride and space to explore a bit is good.
    2) We won't have the car, so things need to be reachable by public transport from central Bristol. Indeed, a little train or bus ride to get somewhere can be part of the fun.

Beyond that, I'm open to suggestions!

    Thanks in advance

    Tom

Agreed that the Harbour railway is great, and seems to my mind good for little ones as it is not too long, and also you get carried in open wagons so you get to see much more (as well as being different. I'm not so sure about a three year old in the pouring rain though - mine (all boys) would have loved it (my wife less so), but the grandchildren (mostly girls) would be more fussy...

In addition to the above, Clifton Suspension bridge isn't too hard to find, and kid-friendly enough to walk over-and get excited.

There used to be regular ferry services around the various points of interest in the harbour area...

Another option is The Avon Valley Railway at Bitton.
Saturday I believe is diesel, steam on Sunday.
Its a 30 min trip on First 332 from Bristol Bus Stn.
Saturday at XX20, Sunday every 2 hours at 0920/1120 etc.

I reckon the two of you would enjoy "Explore@Bristol" which is on the other side of the dock from the harbour railway/M Shed. Its a hands on science place which is designed for kids to fiddle with stuff. They enjoy fiddling with stuff whilst the adults get to look at the engineering and science - there's some film making/animation facilities upstairs as well. Not particularly railway oriented but something a bit different to break it up.

M Shed, @Bristol, SS Great Britain, BHR, AVR - as a Bristolite I can recommend all these as having been recently we enjoyed them muchly. SS Great Britain is especially good (Look out for the 3rd class room that smells of vomit - deliberately!).
Check the BHR running dates on the M Shed website, you could even park at @Bristol, go round there, then it's a 5 minute walk to M shed (FREE), then catch the BHR to SS Great Britain!

Don't forget the sunday am departure of the Torbay Express from Temple Meads on sunday.
The WSR is easily accessible by train to Taunton then Bus to Bishops Lydeard with seaside at the other end of the line.
Bristol Zoo at Clifton worth a visit.

A great little line but not that easy to get to by public transport as you point out.

A trip on all or part of the Severn beach line esp through the Avon gorge is worth doing.
