The unique gangwayed ‘Thumper' No. 205205 is being put up for sale again by the NYMR following the withdrawal of the successful bidder. The sale includes a spare pair of bogies. The DEMU is in working order apart from the fan drive clutch assembly. Interested purchasers should contact Bryan Draper, Trust Secretary, to arrange an inspection at Grosmont shed via the NYMR Park Street office Pickering

Guess Roy Watts will be after it for the Bluebell to augment their Diesel Fleet.

Perhaps, MichaelH, you didn't read my reply to the last time you suggested it was Roy who personally wanted the Thumper. On the off chance you missed it, I have repeated it for you below. Please read, and learn. [-X

Well how about writing a letter to Colin Chambers? Be good to extend the unit that is already in service at the MHR? The MHR have done to much to their Hampshire unit!

Simple solution I'm sure if someone speaks to Colin Chambers or the MHRPS they will take it off their hands?

The most that will happen is that it is discussed at committee level (again) and the decision would be to ask the membership (again) and the chairman will ask them (again). No personal decisions there at all. So no, we won't see Roy after any diesel (again). But considering the membership voted no last time, what would be the point again?!

The fan drive clutch assembly is the one of the weak points of a Thumper. The Thumper at the MHR failed with the same trouble. But with some luck the S15 group had just purchased the test bed for the Thumpers from Eastleigh works. Which had a clutch assembly still installed in it. Talking to people that work on the unit on the MHR you can't get a fan drive clutch assembly for love or money. So that could be one reason why 205205 is up for sale.

With so many Hampshire/Oxted Units in preservation, then someone/somewhere will have to start a production line!

Doesn't Wimbledon Depot hold spares? If so a good friend of mine will know when if they do or don't and where to find them! So R** do you want to contribute to this? Or is this best keft staying where it is? [-o<

I doubt that they would hold spares for a unit that has been retired - I suspect most of their spares stock is minor parts for the Desiro fleets and main stream spares for the 455 fleets.

I'm not sure that Wimbledon would have been their last depot anyway, I seem to recall that Selhurst was the last to operate a slam door DEMU fleet.

    Regards,

    Dan

Yep you are correct Dan - Selhurst was always the refuelling point etc for Oxteds and Hampshire units! But maybe someone still as an engineer and a know how will beable to locate the necessary parts?! I'm just thinking deep to save this unit and present it Colin Chambers and the MHRPS?

Dan, the only place you are likely to get any spares for a Hampshire/Oxted is from Hastings Diesel Depot. John White serviced them right up to the end, and they also own the 6 Hastings Diesel?

Not sure about this but a class 37 has a fan drive assembly fitted to them. Are they the same has a Thumper fan drive assembly?

I said they serviced Hampshires/Oxteds right up to the end; so they may have spares for Hampshires still there in the Depot

I can't see that as the case as the sound is slightly different from the exhaust? You could be right Lee, but just going on what i've heard before on both sets of engines?

Yep they could do; but vewry much doubt it in years gone by! You would have to say that they would have sold any spares on! Hence Selhurst would be the most viable alternative to finding the part for this unit? Although is this a part that can be made from scratch with plans? :-k
