    Chums,
looking for some advice. It is my understanding that HMRI regulations stipulate top of rail to platform heights for new railways, I believe a tolerance of 295-310mm. If that is the case, do these regulations apply to reinstating a lifted heritage line? I only ask because a tour of NR and heritage lines will reveal all sorts of heights from rail to platform (and I really don't fancy digging out tonnes of spoil from our trackbed).
    Grateful for any advice.
    Cheers,

    Ralph

The old mandatory requirements have now largely gone out of the window. Stepping distance is now considered to be more important than height. If you haven't read it, have a look at:
    http://www.rail-reg.gov.uk/upload/pdf/rsp005-minorrail.pdf

    Para 202 states:
"The floor or footboards of passenger rolling stock should be as close as practicable to the platform. The vertical and horizontal distances between the platform edge and the floor or footboards of the passenger rolling stock should not exceed 250 mm and 275 mm respectively, or 350 mm on the diagonal. These dimensions should only be exceeded when dispensation has been obtained from HMRI."

If in doubt, have a chat with your local friendly HMRI. They are always most helpfu and take a sensible and practical view..

    The platform height should be 915mm with a tolerance of + 0 / - 25mm
This to be in combination with the Horizontal clearance of 730 mm from Running edge to face of platform.
This is the requirement on the straight there is an allowable increase for curveature. There is a table in the PWI book British Railway track or in Track construction standards from NWR.
The above dimensions of 250/ 275 and 350 refer to the stepping distance.
