Open access train operator Grand Central has deferred the launch date of its Sunderland to London King's Cross service by four months, following delays to the programme of refurbishment work on its recently acquired fleet of High Speed Trains.

This is the second postponement since the company was cleared by the Office of Rail Regulation to run trains along the East Coast Main Line. Services are now expected to begin in September 2007, instead of the scheduled launch date of 20 May. This date replaced the previously expected launch of 10 December 2006 when Grand Central admitted in November 2006 that it had encountered difficulties procuring rolling stock. In March this year the company was sold by Fraser Eagle to a private equity backed consortium.
