This past weekend (July 23-26) the largest gathering of in-steam locomotives in the USA took place at the Steam Railroad Institute in Owosso Michigan, primarily as a fundraiser for Pere Marquette 1225 which is due for her 15 year FRA overhaul in 2010 (and as proof of that she failed before the weekend with Flu tube problems and couldn't haul her Saturday excursion). PM 1225 is the locomotive which was used as the design model for the loco in the Tom Hanks animated movie The Polar Express that came out several years ago.

In attendance at the festival were:

Pere Marquette 1225, 2-8-4 (Based in Owosso MI at Steam Railway Institute)
Nickel Plate Road 765, 2-8-4 (Based in Fort Wayne Indiana and virtual twin of PM 1225)
Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 4-8-4 (Based in Portland Oregon and east for the first time in decades)
Flagg Coal No. 75 0-4-0ST (Privately owned in Ashley Indiana)
Little River No.110 4-6-2 (Based at Little River Railroad in Coldwater Michigan)
Little River No.1 0-4-0ST (Based at Little River Railroad in Coldwater Michigan)
Viscose No.6 0-4-0ST (Privately owned in Dunkirk New York)
Leviathan No. 63 4-4-0 (Privately owned New Build Central Pacific Railway replica based on Chicago Illinois)

Highlights for me were just to see the Daylight as it basically never comes east, and the trio of 0-4-0ST's blackening the sky with a candidate for Clag of the Year pulling 1225 forward on Saturday evening to position her around the turn table for the Night Photo Shoot (which i couldn't get a ticket to sadly :( )

I will post again when i get a chance to go through all my shots from the weekend and put together a flickr gallery, but for now, a teaser image of NKP765 on the Sunday Excursion (which was marred for the video gang by the Chopper at 200feet Above Ground filming the run, lots of bitching from the galleries on that one)

Good shot - I always think that those NKP 2-8-4s are some of the best looking steam locos around.

It has been a great show and though I'm not supprised it hasn't been mentioned here before as getting info on non-uk events is diffecult. I've been following 4449 on its trip and looking with envy at the shots posted on the web. I am glad it has all gone well and look forward to watching 4449 head back home in October.

Got to http://www.railpictures.net for some of the photos - stunning many.
