An investigation has begun after a late night train with 150 youths on board was vandalised on its way to Liverpool.

Police were called to the disturbance on the 2240 BST Warrington Central to Liverpool Lime Street train while it was in the Hough Green area of Widnes. Seventeen windows were smashed and fire extinguishers set off, police said. The train was said to be extremely busy with teenagers who were heading home from a youth disco at Mr Smith's nightclub in Warrington.

British Transport Police requested help from officers from Cheshire Constabulary. No arrests were made although police said enquires were ongoing.
