Dozens of vandalism attacks have been reported on the West Midlands rail network so far this year.

Network Rail has issued a warning for young people to stay off the tracks after 187 incidents in 2006.

Holidays see a rise in children playing on tracks and throwing stones at trains.

West Midlands Route Director Peter Strachan said: "We don't want any child to die as a result of playing on the railway this Easter."

He said youngsters are injured and killed because they play where trains travel up to 125mph, taking two miles to stop after emergency brakes have been applied.

Network Rail and its industry partners have developed a "No Messin!" campaign, aiming to get young people to take part in fun and safe activities rather than to playing on the railway.

Mr Strachan said: "You wouldn't try to use a motorway as a short cut or a place to hang out- so why the railway? Our message is clear: "No Messin!"
