Voith is to supply 4,800 couplers for a new fleet of suburban trainsets ordered by South African rail authority PRASA.

Scharfenberg Couplers will be fitted to all 600 X’Trapolis Mega trains being built by Alstom and Gibela to operate on suburban routes around Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

It is the largest single order for Scharfenberg Couplers in the company’s history.

Delivery of the couplers will begin later this year and continue until 2025.

Voith has said it plans to build on its presence in South Africa over the next 10 years through the production and project management of the contract.
