After much deliberation and our successful trip to Glasgow with “Lizzie”, I can confirm that we at Vintage Trains are planning on running a 3-day excursion from Birmingham to Edinburgh in late May 2012 with 5043.

We are currently taking bookings from those who expressed an interest and paid a deposit earlier in the year. We are taking bookings from everyone else in early January with the release of our 2012 Brochure.

Full details of route, etc will be released in our 2012 Brochure and in the steam heritage press.

If anyone can recall an instance when a green GWR express engine WITH a rake of choc/cream coaches has been over the Forth Bridge, PLEASE let me know!

Hoping to be there :) Shap and Beattock is a must, the Forth Bridge is just a bonus.

Not to put a damper on this scheme but how fixed are the dates - given that many people will be booking accommodation and wish to avoid the problems that could arise if the dates change. In my case that cost could be in the middle hundreds - which I am happy to pay but will be angered to lose. Apologies if this sounds scare-mongering but money is tight and I need to ensure best returns.

Have booked on this and already booked accomdation so the dates had better remain fixed.

Looking forward to destroying Beattock with a proper engine.

There are quite a lot of booking agents, like lastminute.com, where you can cancel with little loss, with onl about 48 hours notice. (Other booking agents are available!!!)

A polite note to all is that the Edinburgh Marathon is the same weekend, so the sooner hotels are booked the better.

We have no plans to change the itinerary. We did consider bringing the trip forwards, but we were challenged to find a suitable alternative date that worked for all the parties involved in putting this trip together.

If you go to the tour page on the VT website, we are recommending the purchase of travel insurance just in case.

Castle To Scotland featuring 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe - 26-28 May 2012

I will answer any (serious) questions I can!

To see a proper engine like the Castle on Beattock will indeed be fantastic. There isn't a steam loco in the UK however that can destroy Beattock though I'm afraid. Duchesses are best suited obviously but the sustained hard miles after Carlisle to Cove and Castlemilk coupled with the length of Beattock turn it into a precentages climb. It will certainly help though if they could get over Wamphray in the high 70's. Brilliant for 'gricers' though as the old main road is empty and you can pace the loco for the whole climb.

If you haven’t yet booked this tour, you might want to think about doing it fairly soon. There are some seats available, but not a huge amount.

We are also selling the Forth Circle separately if anyone wants to join us for the Sunday trip over the Forth Bridge.

5043 will go from Plymouth to Edinburgh and Llandudno in the space of 4 weeks!

Anyone up for a trip to Scotland behind 5043 in a few weeks? I've got a few one-way seats if you don't want to do the full weekend.....

Plus we are selling the Sunday Forth Circular separately also.....Castle over the Forth Bridge......not to be missed!

Surely the earl should have a castle to rest in? :S See if they'll accept her in Balmoral for the night? :D

This has become even more tempting now! £75 for the 250 miles from Crewe to Edinburgh! You may receive a phonecall later!
