We have decided to add a 3rd Coach for Standard Class on this tour. This adds an additional 64 seats, but they are selling very fast.

This brings the total load to 9 coaches including Support and Buffet. This is just within the limits for a double-chimney 4 row-superheated Castle such as 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe".

Let's hope the sun is out for some photos along the sea wall.

Ben, seeing as to how you have added a coach to the train it might be a good thing that 5029 and 4936 are going to be in Bristol at the same time.

Why? Do you really think 5043 can't get over the banks?

If seats keep selling as fast as they are does VT have that option?
I know 5043 can do the nine.

We always have the option to add another engine and I'm sure if we asked nicely both those engines could be available to us, however, this tour is going to be a single-engine sprint over the banks. No more coaches will be added!

I think the selling point of this trip is 5043 unassited attacking the banks, overloading and requiring a second engine would make it lose it's appeal from a performance point of view.

Wish I was on this one, but Shap & Beattock proved irresitable.

Precisely, it's VT giving the customer exactly what they want.

Ben: what is the weight of the Tyseley buffet (9101)? I assume it has been weighed after modification? I have always 'guessed' 33 tons. So the load would be something like 317 tons tare?

5029 took 301.5 tons tare last year (8 coaches) but that was very close for comfort (8 mph at the top of Hemerdon).

Yes I am an active volunteer
But remember that 5029 is a single chimney example.

I would like to clarify that the low speed at the top of Hemerdon was due to the less than favourable condition of the fire on the return run from Par.

Look at 5029's performance going up Dainton on the outward run if you want a real comparison:

Nunney Castle on the "conishman" Climbing Dainton Bank 10/7/2011 - YouTube

5043 will most likely go up quicker due to its increased superheat, improved draughting and crew familiarity.

    Cheers

For connections - try and be in Bristol at 10am at the latest. We don't have times yet - this is based on the trip we did a couple of years ago.

I was not making a comment about 5029, she did well enough and comparable with 5051 in 2005 although both runs had different checks. The re-start on Tigley by 5029 was particularly impressive.

I know, was just making sure that others that read the post understood that it wasn't the loco's fault. :)

For anyone on this trip, looking for something to do while in Plymouth,
there is a scale model exhibition at the Guildhall on Saturday.
