Wabtec has won a $9 million contract to supply Positive Train Control (PTC) technology for San Diego’s Oceanside services.

The contract, which includes an option worth another $5 million, will see Wabtec providing its Interoperable Electronic Train Management System (I-ETMS®) for seven locomotives and 10 passenger vehicles on the North County Transit District’s (NCTD) Coaster train.

In 2008, the Rail Safety Improvement Act was passed, requiring PTC systems to be installed on all trains by December 31, 2015.

Herzog Technologies, which awarded the PTC contract to Wabtec, was previously named by the NCTD to deliver the upgrade.

Albert Neupaver, Wabtec’s chairman and chief executive officer, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Herzog, NCTD and other industry suppliers on this important project.

“This demonstrates the role we can play, as PTC technology continues to be deployed by other transit agencies around the U.S. over the next several years.”
