Times now up on UKSteam http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t09/t0502d.htm

and interesting that the steam section has been revised -- now diesel hauled to Llandudno, so the need for the 5s to run down to Valley to turn has been cut out.

Thanks for the reminder Mike, I had forgotten about this one, I was discussing travelling on this one with a couple of other Nat Pres members but as my better half is busy that day will be taking the kids for a bit of linesiding somewhere in the Conway Valley and then see them at Abergele on the return.

    Neil.

Makes sense really, that long wait at Llandudno whilst the locos went to Valley to turn was a bit much, and would have made the day far too long.

What, this makes no sense at all. I was looking forward to a couple of hours by the sea as part of an interesting day.

What's the point of even going to Llandudno ??? We're only there 19 minutes and it's Diesel in and out! Then an hour at Llandudno Jc. so basically between 10.30 and 12.02 nothing happens. This'll be an interesting letter when the tickets come.

Just had a look at the timings on this, it's going to be just a one shot day, got to be back home reasonably early. Anyone on it to give me some update info on the day?

Catch the 11.45 ex Llandudno to the Junction - arrives 11.53

That way you can avoid being trapped "up the junction" for an hour and a half and get to see something of the Llandudno Transport Festival which Dobbin hasn't taken any account of in his agreed timings

Despite the revised timings etc, this is still on the RTC website

"At Crewe we will exchange our diesel for 45407 and 45231 Stanier Class 5 steam locomotives before continuing to Chester. Our train runs alongside the city’s impressive Roman Walls, across the River Dee and into Wales, following the Dee Estuary to the Irish Sea. Prestatyn and Rhyl fly past on a delightful coastline of beautiful beaches, with views of Colwyn Bay and the magnificent Great Orme. We will have three hours or so free to explore Llandudno and experience the town’s annual Victoria Extravaganza."

Letter and tickets arrived this morning. Apparently it's all due to pathing. Special train organised on the Festiniog for which we have to pay. No appology for the extensive changes or why we're going into Llandudno at all now. Not RTC's finest hour.

Well it can cause you problems. Recent story, for example, of some Americans spending time in London who wanted to visit Conwy Castle. Thing is, they were sold and given train times/connections for........................ Conway Park!

There was in English, you mean. Some North Wales towns still use names in both languages, but some have officially only used a Welsh form for many years, typically ones where the forms weren't very different and/or conveyed the same information - e.g. Porthmadog, Caernarfon, Conwy. In a case like Caergybi/Holyhead the Welsh name means something completely different ("St Cybi's fortress"), or for another example the town of Menai Bridge is also Porthaethwy ("harbour at the mouth of the Aethwy", the bridge doesn't even get a mention). Some have never had an English name at all - examples relevant to this thread being Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

You can still find Conway Castle with an "a" though - it's usually the yard pilot at Dinas on the Welsh Highland...
