Just got an email from the Wensleydale Railway about visiting locomotives coming to their first ever steam gala. They are hoping to bring:
    • Black 5 - 45305 "Aderman A.E. Draper"
    • GWR56XX Tank Engine
A gala i surely will not be missing at all!

    Cheers for now

well neither 45305 or any 56xx are air braked

if air brakes are required then 5521 would fit the bill

I seen it mentioned on another forum that after the departure of certain people the railway is now becoming, very sensibly, a 'heritage railway'. I guess this confirms it!

Black 5s are a go anywhere workhorse and were not common on the line in BR days.... but Southern engines really I think look and sound awful. Id melt Repton and that S15 and make a J39 out of them if I could.... its just my own opinion and seeing something like a Southern engine around here grinds on me. I just dont like them compared to others - I dont like the appearance, shape and think the engineering compared with others really lags behind. (but being fair theres other Eastern region engines I dont like too.... not that many of them are around now... ) Truro thats coming later in the year is a novelty that Id see beacuse I do like the engine, its got some style power and good engineering. Even the other Western tank would be worth seeing on the branch under load.... however, a Southern engine such as this is just something I dont like... so wont be going. I hope those that do, enjoy the weekend. I know its an NRM machine so its good of them to stand in at short notice to help too.

Do you not think that it is kind of sad that the original aims of the Wensleydale Railway were not achieved?

A community railway, serving the dale - is it unachievable?

Shame about 45305, but having had 30926, 825 and 30777 for haulage in the last year or so; that gets the thumbs up from me.

Yes I have seen 30926 and 825 come to grief on the 1 in 49s of the NYMR but most locos have at some point.

I hope the event is a success and the first of many.

Better to be realistic and succeed than a pipedream that fails.

Yes,in my opinion. An all year round operation, several times a day with paid staff and a handful of passengers at best-work out the maths.

Could someone from the Wensleydale please furnish some more details on this event. I'd like to knkow what the two train sets comprise of, is it Mark 1s and/or mark 2s and/or a DMU set?

I see the first train is at 8.30am is it possible to get breakfast at Leeming Bar?

Will their be trade stands etc and other things to look at?

    Are photo permits available?

    Many thanks

What I will say about the schools and S15 is that they very free steaming and economical locos. 30777 made a ratehr fine noise departing from Redmire when it worked a railtour up the line a few years back, so should be interesting!

    Hi Respite

As a volunteer I'll try and help answer some of your questions.

The sets work out like this, 3 MK1s plus a DMU centre car painted maroon to match the coaches, the other set will be DMU's being hauled, sadly we just don't have the Mk1s to make two Mk1 sets, hopefully this might be changing next year.

I will find out for you regarding breakfast, there was a take away van at the diesel gala in September, so will find out if that will be there this time.

The gift shop has many good second hand and new books, some very good cheap deal I must say, there might be some trade stands ouside, I will find out.

I have to say, I'm rather saddened by 'The Black Hats' comments. I'm defintely not a 'Southern' man, but at the end of the day, it's our first steam gala, first time two steam locos have been on the line in 50 years. This year is make or break for the railway, and to hear someones not coming for the reason of motive power (which is still steam, not as if it's been replaced with a Diesel loco) I find a real shame.

    I hope others don't turn away :(

    Tom
