With the short up loop of the previous arrangement, the up starter was very close to the end of the loop, so that in the event that this signal was passed at danger by just a few feet, the down line could be fouled. So, when trains were due to cross, the up train was admitted to the station first, and needed to be stationary before the down home signal could be cleared.
The longer loop will give sufficient distance beyond the up starter for an accidental and unintended SPAD to occur without fouling the down line.

Even more important is that there will be trap points at the ends of both loops which actually allows simultaneous entries, as at Crowcombe. Without the trap points, even the extended loops would not have been sufficient to allow two trains to enter at the same time.

Nice to see the juice rail going in on the down side, somewhere for the 3 CIG to run?

It is a phased project that will undoubtedly take a couple of years to complete.

The next priority is, no doubt, to have a competed loop to pass trains during the February half term. I'll lay a small bet that includes some hand signalling.

Then there is the March 'super' Gala at which hand signalling would be a faff, but we can cope with it, followed by Easter and daily running where we would hope to have 'all signalled' working.

The delights of outer homes and advanced starters are in the later phases. They would be very useful for the Christmas working (running round Santa trains) but I wonder which Christmas...... ?

    You are welcome.

My only role there so far has been to take some snaps of the hard work being done by others.

But next week I am due to be out as 'travelling signalman' for a ballast working and, no doubt, will take my turn with others as handsignalman over the coming weeks.

Can I also say that I was privileged to be asked to make a small contribution to the classroom day for the next batch of WSR signalmen in January, and we seem to have recruited a good batch.

Talking of which - did you ever settle on three or so historic accidents for your training presentation that was subject of a thread on here a couple of months back?

Would you mind posting a link to that thread, please?
It might be more interesting than the gallimaufry of wibble on the usual one.

I am not sure how to do that. Could someone more technologically-abled than me help?
