Not only would one works be slightly different to another, but also each batch would have been slightly different - from what I understand, paint was mixed by hand, so if the bloke pouring added a little bit more of one pigment and a bit less of another, it could make quite a difference to the result. Plus, as has been noted earlier in this thread, paint fades differently in different conditions, and modern paint will fade differently to traditional sorts.

Therefore, chances are, the correct shade to use is all of them!

A few years ago I was wanting some Saxony green for a NER loco. A chance conversation led me to the Ken Hoole Trust who had a NER paint swatch from Darlington. It had been kept in an envelope out of light for many years. I was able to borrow this and, out of interest, compared it with all the NER locos in the NRM collection. It didn’t match any. Some were quite noticeably different. I don’t think anyone Is bothered though.

Still very useful for those who still have open fires, something is needed to light the sticks. :D:D

In the past, The Times was printed on paper which made it useless for lighting fires. No problem now I would suspect.

If it was sufficiently non-flammable to be useless as fire starting fuel, then it was probably excellent for holding across the fireplace to draw the fire.

I understand that Foxcote is due to arrive on the WSR tomorrow. So that is three Manors, 9351, and 53808 for the summer. Looks good to me.

It’s noted to be at the Tysely open day next weekend, wonderful to have had it down here.

With the WSR supposed to be on its beam ends, spending money on transporting stuff around does seem a little strange.

With the degree of positivity of some contributors to Nat Pres, its a wonder we haven't all gassed ourselves here in Somerset.

Avoiding a plethora of visiting motive power is merely a way to reduce expenses. The economics of galas anywhere, not just the WSR are questionable.

The economics of railway preservation in the 1960s/1970s was also questionable. Thank goodness they were more positive in those days. <BJ>

It's said that you can't please all of the people all of the time. But on Nat Pres it seems you can't please some of the people any of the time. :(
