Last week was Autumn Bash week at the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog)...... pictures are now online at - http://www.tinyurl.com/yqtxbm

If you hover your mouse over each picture, some words should appear to explain what's going on. Alternatively, if you click on each picture, a larger version with caption should pop up.

A large crane visited the site, and was visible from some miles away. Its main job was to clear the area immediately behind the Big Shed.

Have a look here: http://davids.fpic.co.uk/p43879581.html ...... and you can see that there's lots of small shapes (heritage wagons on display) immediately above the large green building.

This area (the South Yard) will eventually house the new museum building, which will look a bit like this: http://tinyurl.com/2qolcp

So last weekend, the crane was clearing the heritage wagons from this area so that it can be built on during 2008. It also had to move the volunteers' mess.

Other work during the week included lifting Traeth Mawr Loop, which was always intended to be a temporary fixture. It has to be removed to allow the completed WHR to be connected from the north. We also built a new siding to the coal dock immediately north of Gelert's Farm Works. Coal used to be delivered by road, but the road access ran along the trackbed of the Cross Town Rail Link (which links the WHR(P) with the FR at Harbour Station ). Work has now started on this section the Cross Town Link, meaning the WHR(P) coal dock has been cut off.

From now on, coal will be delivered to an unloading pad in the yard at Gelerts Farm, and transported the last few metres to the coal dock by rail. The resulting siding is somewhat on the steep side, and was extremely good fun to build......
