Which engines in the National Collection would anyone like to see running (which have never run - thus far - in preservation)?

    For me:

    1) LBSCR "Gladstone" - would go very well with the eventual Stroudley carriage rake under restoration at the Bluebell Railway.

    2) LBSCR "Boxhill" - ditto.

    3) GWR 'Dean Goods'

    4) GWR "Lode Star"

    5) GER shunting tank

    6) SECR D Class

    7) LSWR M7 no. 245

    8) GSWR tank - in Riverside Museum, Glasgow.

    9) NSR tank no. 2 - could go with NSR carriages under restoration at the Foxfield Railway (on the CVR/MCR system!).

    10) LSWR Adams 4-4-0

    11) NER (S&D type) 0-6-0 no. 1275

    12) LTSR "Thundersley"

I a little surprised that you didn't mention Duchess of Hamilton.

118/673 Midland Spinner (I'd like to see its more elegant Johnson front-end restored and ti painted in the high-Midland style (pre-1905).

Hamilton and 2500 are quite rightly the obvious choices, but i'd love to see the Midland Compound and Thundersley back in steam.

    42500 and MR 1000.

42500 could engage in shorter mainline runs, and be a welcome guest on heritage lines. The Compound because it is unique--as a compound--and would be another 4-4-0 back in steam.

Interesting to see the OP's list of 12 above, but he forgets one tiny detail....

Not quite unique - GNR(I) No85 'Merlin' is also a 4-4-0 compound and is well on the way to a return to steam at Whitehead (RPSI)

Not sure I'd call 2500 an obvious choice, personally. One could argue that we already have two LMS 2-6-4Ts working (albeit Fairburn rather than Stanier), so why do we need a third? Furthermore, she is the NRM's only example of a really large tank engine, and one of their very few commuter tank engines. As such, I think that returning her to steam would leave a significant gap in the NRM's displays at York. But then, if the NRM are seriously considering returning her to steam then I am sure they have already considered these points.

In a world where money was no object and engines never wore out, I'd love to return the entire NRM collection to steam. In practice, however, I will always respect the museum's judgement as to which engines can and can't steam again.

'Cecil Raikes' . It is a national collection loco, but under the 'care' of National Museums Merseyside. They will never restore it & are never likely to have anywhere to display it.

Ooh - now I like that idea! A real "Cinderella loco", very interesting and historically significant, being the last six-coupled double-framer in Britain. I expect she'd need quite a lot of work, though.

I would really like to see the J17 steam, in terms of useful power and size I can't think of many more appropriate candidates!

Assuming money is no object, and machines don't wear out...

Personally, top of my list would be the LSWR T3; and after that Gladstone and the SECR D class.

For real interest though, I'd like to see some of the early locos run, on the grounds that nothing like them is currently running, and it would be very interesting to experience them in operation. So that would include the LNWR pair of Columbine and Cornwall. OK, it would probably be a struggle to find a line where they could be commercially viable, but I did say assuming money is no object.

As for more modern engines, particularly where others of the same or similar class already exist in running order outside the national collection, I'm pretty indifferent. So the LSWR M7, the LBSC terrier, 34051, the Black Five, Evening Star etc etc - in my view there isn't sufficient gain in terms of new knowledge and understanding to make it worth further loss of historical identity. .

The loco needs a new set of tyres, possibly new tanks & bunker ,a boiler overhaul which should not be a major job as it was a replacement fitted in 1934 & only had 20 years use, & general overhaul of bearings & fittings. There are a few parts missing from when it was in open storage in Liverpool, but nothing major.

While it would be nice to see Cecil Raikes back in steam, i'd just be happy for her to be on display - is there any way the NRM could lobby the museum to take her into their care, whether permanently or for a certain time period? I know space is very limited, but such an unusual and interesting loco would surely have a better case than most for display and/or overhaul.
