Has any activity been seen in Carnforth this winter? Whether it be 5690 or not.
Many people here are definitely looking forward to the sight of both Jubilees on mainline.
Just hoping for some small bits if nothing else.

note: please keep this thread separate from the gazillion page Leander Thread

The answer is yes you will see 5690 in 2014 assuming nothing untoward happens as the overhaul continues.

But, as we all know, Carnforth do not issue progress reports, at least not to the outside World, as indeed they have no obligation to so do. No doubt the owner paying for the work will be kept uptodate.

As we have said before with other Carnforth jobs, when it is seen outside the shed on steam test, then we will know the overhaul is nearing completion.

The loco may be at Carnforth but its owner is an official at the NRM - so why does he feel the need for the Carnforth culture of secrecy?

The answer is therefore for someone to approach the owner, and ask for a progress report, whe he may or may not be inclined to give. Not a question of "secrecy", the progress of the work he is paying for is a matter between him and the contractor.
If it was me, my answer to the wider world would be a firm " it will be done when it is done...".

I dont see what any possible connection of the owner with the NRM has to do with the issue.

"Lineside Rumour" (take from that what you will plus a pinch of salt) a couple of weeks ago was that the overhaul has reached steam test stage. It's a privately owned loco being worked on at a private site so until a press release is issued or it makes a public appearance there is only speculation. Will be a welcome return whenever it happens, so all the very best to those working to make it happen.

At the risk of stirring up the perennial hornet's next, I wonder whether we will see 5690 or 45690 this year. There was some talk in the Steam Beano of it being given a change of identity. Given Galatea's BR maroon (well, sort of), it will be interesting to see quite how Leander will emerge when it is complete.

John, do you ( or SR...) mean a change of livery and hence BR numbering as 45690, or a change of identity ? ie of another "Jubilee" ?

    ...Now that would be interesting!

By my quick calculation 184 choices, ie 190 minus the two rebuilts, 45735/6, and the other preserved, including itself. ie 45690, 45699, 45593 and 45596.

Please dont lets start a "what was my favourite Jubilee" listing!

( not to mention "Alberta" of course....)

So you're either a Rolling Stones fan or remember the BS5750 repaint of 5593 at the ELR in August 1994 - giving your age away ? :)

A black Jubilee at the end of steam? Sure it wasn't just layers of grime?

It was already black as 5552 from a GCR makeover. The BS5750 was a publicity stunt to promote Ian Riley's quality assurance initiative of the time renumbering the Jub with British Standard nameplates. The crew all wore white overalls as well - to my eternal shame I was the fireman. Folly of youth!

Yes, I think one did but can't for the life of me remember which one. Seem to remember seeing a photo of it at St. Pancras about 1948/9.
