its a shame that D818 didnt make it, I believe it's bogies survive somewhere in the bushes in Bury. With the discovery of power unit's more recently its chances now could have been somewhat better, as too with D7096.

Or even some of the class 22's or NBL built D864 seen at Swindon dump.
A bit ironic that I remember seeing some of the Westerns shown on the scrap line being built at Swindon around 1961, as was D870 with it's roof mounted horns.

I remember going to an Open day at Swindon -1976 I think, could be wrong could be 1977 - one of the attractions was "scrap a Western" in which you were allowed free access to a "corpse" of a 52 and were allowed to keep anything you could prise off it! Most of the takers were teenage boys like myself (at the time!) I declined, but some were obviously forewarned as they came tooled up with hammers!

True, but whilst they were gone in the 1970s... D818 was alive in 1985.. it was cut for malice, not policy... by disgruntled BR Swindon Works staff following the closure announcement.

Maybe true, but one story I heard was that D818's bodywork was pretty rotten & therefore "beyond" saving. As for the works closure announcement, what can you say? Right in the middle of the GWR 150? celebrations, the proposed Swindon works open days were obviously immediately cancelled, I had plans to attend one of those, at least the Swindon - Gloucester steam trips still ran. Had a good trip behind 4930 on one of those.

It weren't that bad... I've dabbed it as a 10 year old and still have the pictures, it was repainted blue in the 70's (as per the pictures here) and again into Green. I recall it was missing many internal components, but the rest of it weren't that bad. I believe at the time (and reasonably enough) that there was no hope of it running again due to lack of internals (something which history recently changed), similarly, D7096 met its fate in Yorkshire for similar beliefs.

also at Swindon at some point in time was D5705, but history is yet to see this restored.
Many rare diesels survived into the 1980's but failed to make the diesel preservation mania that started with the demise of the class 45's.
