New tram tracks are to be installed on Nottingham’s Wilford Lane, completing a key component of the network’s southern extension.

The road will be closed for the duration of the works, which will require moving utility services as well as laying track for the new line.

Once NET Phase Two is complete in 2014, trams will run from the centre of Nottingham, over Wilford Lane to Clifton

Nottingham City Council has announced that part of Wilford Lane will be closed to traffic from September 1 for around four months.

More than £750 million is being spent in a coordinated effort to improve transport infrastructure in the city of Nottingham.

As well as the tram extension, £100 million is being invested in upgrading rail infrastructure around the city’s main railway station.

Network Rail has already completed several significant upgrades, including the installation of a new signalling system controlling trains in the Beeston area.

Councillor Jane Urquhart, Nottingham City Council’s head of planning and transport, said: “Wilford Lane is an important component in Nottingham’s transport network.

“That is why we have been working closely to ensure the tram contractor devises a works programme which minimises disruption as far as possible for those living and working in the area and the wider travelling public, and why we have worked with partners to coordinate these works with other current and future major transport schemes on the Greater Nottingham transport network.”
