Work to start on San Francisco subway stations

Construction is set to begin on four new subway stations as part of San Francisco’s $1.6 billion Central Subway extension.

U.S. construction giant Tutor Perini has begun preparatory works after being awarded the $840 million contract for phase two of the Third Street Light Rail Program - the second stage of a major expansion of the city’s Muni Metro system.

Tutor Perini is responsible for construction of three new underground subway stations – Union Square/Market Street, Chinatown and Yerba Buena Gardens/Moscone Center – an overground station at 4th and Brannan Street, and trackwork and systems from 4th and Brannan to Chinatown.

Phase 1 of the T Third Street light rail line opened in 2007.​

Around $1.6 billion is being spent on the Central Subway Project, which will extend the T Third Street line by 1.7 miles, linking it with some of the city’s busiest districts.

Earlier this month, Tutor Perini was awarded a major design an build contract, this time worth $985 million, for the first phase of California’s high-speed rail network.
