    Interesting to see Samson at Huddersfield, I once saw Amazon at Stalybridge, going West light engine. Perhaps it had been to Crewe. Of course I was the only person there who thought it 'special', as the 'namers' were strictly WR locos.

    The sort of rare treat that made all those lineside hours worthwhile....

    I didn't know at the time, but read about a year ago that as those named 47s had long range fuel tanks, every two years they were loaned from Bath Road to Canton depot for working the rugby specials Cardiff - Edinburgh. As a result many Scottish railfans would descend on Waverly & Haymarket before the Murrayfield game.
    I've no idea which route they would have taken, but asume they would have gone Cardiff - Brum - Carlisle - Edin.
