True, they never did quite get around to settling on a design that worked did they? :D

You mean they didn't stop designing in 1923?

Given the stock that the LMS had in 1923 they had to do something .... Anything!

Yes, amazing that the Board of Directors let them get away with so many cock-ups :)

I always thought that the LMS painted their loco's black to distinguish them from the ldentical green ones built at Swindon

I think the green ones having sticky out cylinders that had a tendency to clout platforms, makes them slightly different to the black ones that even now are a truly go anywhere do anything machine.

Yes of course. The Swindon built versions of the black 5 seemed to always have rust around the chimney caps, poorly maintained obviously.

Only necessary due to the inferior spec of the lines involved.

Funny really that the GW did end up with the extra width there. Not really anything to do with the broad gauge AFAICS. There doesn't seem to be any especial reason why the West Midland and successors might have wanted a bit more width at platform height. That it wasn't for cylinders is obvious when one considers the tale of Wigmore Castle and her wooden cylinders...

According to Holcroft some time in 1901 Dean single 3021 was sent round all the main lines with wooden templates attached to the frames between the bogie wheels to check clearances.

Is that what's called "checking the dynamic envelope"? It would save NR a lot of time with computers and laser scanners ... ;)

Well, if you ever want to consider bringing a Hall or Manor to the Bluebell, now you know what to do first...

    sounds a good plan

PS of course a business minded single track preserved railway could always slew their track a few inches t crucial spots to allow a better selction of visitors...

If the GWS ever build theirs maybe it could have a dual role...
