Mr Valla has declared 46233 to be "a beast" and now his favourite loco - so must have been good from the footplate too :)

That's because his locomotive territory was, I think, nowhere near these magnificent machines so little wonder he might be impressed.

Not surprising really, they are too big for most of the network ( Gauging :Saywhat: )

Duchess is indeed more powerful, so should it not be at least as fast as an A4..? ;)

It was once explained to me by a locomotive engineer that is not always the case.

Something to do with front end design and things that go in and out and round and round.

As you can gather the explanation went in one ear and, finding nothing to stick to, it came straight out the other ear.

...and glue ear is not a solution either! Yes, what happens to the steam and how it is handled can make quite a difference with seemingly similar locomotives. And then there is André Chapelon but that's a whole new thread.

Potential max speed is not just a matter of horsepower and tractive effort.

I somehow doubt the Duchess would have much issue matching that if allowed, hardley Staniers fault if the WCML won't allow them to run freely without ending up nearly demolishing crewe :p

But they are big factors, and as per david1984's response it's a shame a Duchess hasn't had the chance to 'show off' a little...
