Boy that is an ugly looking train - guess the scenery makes up for it all?!

I doubt those who travel on it are overly concerned. It's the ride, scenery etc. That they go for.

But it's built for a purpose not for looks, it serves that purpose very well.

If I may say one last thing. Was this coach actually one which was in danger of being scrapped, or was in poor condition, before the end was cut off? It doesn't change my view that it should not have happened, but it does perhaps make it more tolerable. I do think the attitude of "it's just another Mk1" doesn't wash with me - they're not making any more of them so reducing the pool of genuinely serviceable vehicles further and further as the years go on is clearly not the way to go.

Did you not read my post? The coach is not lost, its just lost some metal that is replaceable should the need arise at a future date . . . . .like so many other mk1s bits of steel have to be replaced generally due to corrosion (you know this if you get up close and personal to mk1s ) - but in this case if the need arose there is a slightly different reason for steel replacement.

But for now the coach can serve another purpose like bringing in the £ needed to keep the trains running. . .

When purchased the E1 arrived on the Isle of Wight in BR livery applied by its previous owner. Currently that livery has been adapted to represent one of the long lost Island E1s.

The IWSR has been presenting its locos in a variety of liveries relevant to the loco since the 1970s and repaints are rarely without a livery change, so I would expect the E1 to appear in SR and BR liveries once overhauled.

The IWSR has two pre-grouping vehicles adapted for the carriage of the disabled - an LCDR 4 wheeler and an LBSCR bogie coach. The latter was extended during its restoration to accommodate the enlarged compartment and its double doors. In both vehicles the adaptation is hard to see, but presumably offends the purist.

As I said previously - no, that doesn't offend me at all. Please don't misrepresent my position (as I appear to be the only one giving the alternate viewpoint). I'm all for adaptation where necessary and where reasonable. Disabled access of course comes into that, as does use for the mainline as support coaches.

I suppose what offends me most about the Veranda coach is that it serves no purpose other than an extreme commercial aspect. It certainly can't be called preservation. I do think there are compromises that can be made, as per the above - but is it a compromise too far? Surely we should be having the debate to inform future generations as to what exactly preservation is?

Anyway I've been told tactfully off forum I should pipe down so I will now. Carry on sirs.

I can't believe how much drifting this thread has done. Does anyone know of Passenger Cars located in crewe though? Does Hoskings own any passenger rolling stock that is under renovation?

Irrelevant if I was around or not back then  and stating the obvious that Carnforth was once a steam mecca (or anywhere) doesn't justify painting any loco in an incorrect livery. For me none of the arguments to do so really stack up very well, leaving "It's mine I'll do what I like" as the main reason... which I don't believe is fully respecting a loco's history.

Although as SAC Martin mentioned recently, it might be time to agree to disagree on this subject, especially now everyone has repeated their points about four or five times now....!

I think you may have missed my point but never mind. I'm sure you can join SAC and johnb and keep each other company by having a good moan about the efforts of others.

Spamcan is wrong, this is when Carnforth was a steam Mecca

Those locos could have been pink under that grime and you would never have known.

Love the intimation that I'm not a volunteer, or haven't been previously. Reminds me of a certain television show: You know nothing, Spamcan81...;):)

Now where have I intimated that you are not/have not been a volunteer? Seems you read far too much into one of my posts.
