My offering from Rowlands Castle this evening, where she put on a fine show. A true credit to the MNLPS, and the people at Crewe Works for the overhaul. A truly wonderful way to remember an important anniversary.

    Enjoy!

Interesting. Considered booking this trip up soon. What was the reason for the cancellation?

'Operational reasons'. Will be glad of one less trip to London if truth be told, as I don't intend to transfer to the Scotsman trip. Hopefully the Bognor run will run as planned.

As for yesterday's trip, fantastic is the word, and showed 35028 to be remarkably fleet of foot. A tiring, but enjoyable weekend.

Absolutely Al and spent among so many old friends from the days if steam. One of the best main line trips ever for me. Fabulous. I have now got to calm down and write my column before going away to Europe on holiday.

Unfortunately Wayne some people will jump to the wrong conclusion with information that appears on line, assuming it to be gospel. Short platforms and passengers with wheelchairs booked at the back of the train means that it often happens with charters up here. Loco and several coaches run past the signal to get the back of the train platformed. Also no guard would ever allow his train to depart early from a pick up station.

When my old man was a driver, he said he had a million and one excuses for being late, but none for departing early.

Thanks to everyone involved for a great day out yesterday - MNLPS, UK Railtours and DBC. Great to have Clan Line back doing what she does best. Some great running on a beautiful Summer's day.

Well done to the crews for a great performance - incidentally who were the crew from Salisbury on the return run? It looked like Rob Binsted, Tommy Rees and Bob Hart to me so I'm a bit confused as to who was fireman and who was TI.

I agree that Clan Line now sounds as sweet as a Bulleid ever will and that's against a record of always sounding half decent. But on the Sunset she was simply amazing and some of the climbs and starts were quite 'tingly'.

Arguably one of the most difficult climbs of the day was the eight miles up the Pompey Direct to Buriton straight off the junction at Havant. By the time you get to Rowlands Castle you are talking about gradients of around 1 in 100 with only a few easier respites. And the last two miles of 1 in 80 are tortuous because of the sinuous nature of the line as the train hugs the curves. But we sailed up to the tunnel with Clan Line chattering away running into the tunnel at 33 and that was with 12 for a very full 465 gross on the drawbar.

However, yesterday was also about memories and commemorating the 50th anniversary of something that in my view was the pinnacle of steam on our network simply because of the many sparkling runs that mostly Nine Elms and Eastleigh crews regaled us with in 1967. And Rob Binsted saved the best, in that context, for last.

Because of the delays due to signalling and track problems earlier on we came off the Pompey Direct and straight onto the main to drop people off at Woking. Rob then took us out of Woking just as it used to be with a wonderful, sure-footed start and an acceleration towards West Byfleet to sit alongside the best that you used to get with that load. I am thinking here of a Gordon Porter run with two coaches less when we were through West Byfleet in four and a quarter minutes and then went on to pass Surbiton in well under 12 minutes having run up to the low eighties. Rob was only 7 seconds slower to West Byfleet but had already wound Clan Line up to 60+ by then. So in reply to @mrKnowwun, yes, that might have been a good place to be with a camera.

As I've already said, the day was superb, simply superb.

Can anyone advise the coaching set/numbers used please?

I can see a mixture of choc & cream and blood & custard going past on the various videos.

Clan Line roaring through Grateley on her way to Salisbury and Yeovil Junction. A brilliant performance from her and credit again must go to UK Railtours and the MNLPS. Enjoy.

There is no point in the rotation of the wheels at which a loco cannot produce any TE, but with a 3-cylinder loco when starting from rest there may be only one of the three cylinders delivering any significant TE and that may be insufficient to get a heavy train moving, especially on an adverse gradient. This was discussed at length in another thread: https://www.national-preservation.com/threads/2-cylinders-v-3-cylinders.34703/
It took me a little while to wrap my brain round what at first seems paradoxical; that three cylinders deliver more uniform TE when the loco is running but sometimes very low TE when starting from rest.

Waterloo sunset? Well in the real world the sun had set quite a bit earlier earlier of course, but in our hearts this really was it. Who would want to miss the sight of 35028 at the buffer stops- the end of the line for steam- 50 years on- and just made the last train home!
Absolute praise to all those involved and what a run in from Woking despite several checks- pure Bulleid magic.

My results from yesterday, there couldn't have been a better way of celebrating the last day of Southern Steam than this.
Locations are Totters Lane Bridge between Winchfield and Hook ( it was about here that driver Fred Burridge did 106mph woth 35003 on June 26 1967 on the up fast line), Tisbury and on the way back Romsey and Fareham
