    Hello Fred,

You could be onto something there, certainly regarding the wheel size and cylinders.

Wonderful anecdotes regarding your memories of Gretton Brook and the locos there. The MW that you referred to - 1316/17 - was, I believe, Mr Jones "pet" engine and was kept immaculate, like the rest of the fleet and used on some of the lighter jobs at Corby, it retained it's Welsh name, Rhiwnant for a while, but this was lost in a repaint of the loco sometime in the fifties I believe.

I made several visits to Gretton Brook shed over the years, firstly, just before the class 14s arrived and some of the steam fleet was still working and later in the 1970s before the closure of Corby Steelworks. A wonderful railway system, as were all of the ironstone lines, it's hard to believe that they are all gone, they were indeed, happy days!

    Cheers

    Alan

    Hello All

Looking to revive this thread with a request for help. At the GCRN we're about to start overhauling S&L no. 56 (RSH w/no 7667) and as part of that we're hoping to produce some publicity material associated with a fund-raising appeal. So, for those who can, could you supply
-Any information on the class as a whole - design background, service use, technical stats etc, in addition to those listed in this thread
-Any information on 56 in particular - I know she went from S&L to the KESR to Woolwich and then to Ruddington, but I'm not sure on dates for each move, operational periods etc, and if there were any other bases thrown in somewhere
-Any photographs you may have of 56 you would be willing to let the railway use for publicity
-I remember having an old KWVR stock book which had a page on the 'Uglies', and included a line drawing of the class in this style (https://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/23/18in_1.gif) - if anybody has a copy of that book, would it be possible for you to scan said line drawing and send to me?
-I don't suppose anybody knows the font type used on the S&L Cabside numerals? (https://locoyard.files.wordpress.co...idge-wells-west-rsh-ugly-class-no-62-ugly.jpg)

Thanks in advance, hopefully within a few years 56 will be good as new, and we'll be treated to the sight of another member of this fantastic design once again earning their keep on Britain's preserved railways

Good luck. I had the pleasure of a day's driving course on no. 62 on the Bodmin and Wenford Rly - this loco is now at Spa Valley Rly AFAIK.

A sad sight and not particularly helpful as the name, works and number plates had all been removed but I've uploaded it just for the sight of both variations of the design together. I think this must have been 1968 after steam had finished at Pen Green. A couple of locos remained inside the shed.

  7. She was operational on the KESR in the late 70s (I'm not sure of dates) and unusual in that, along with Terrier Sutton, she was the only KESR steam loco facing 'down the bank' towards Bodiam. All the rest faced 'up', I was told to prevent priming. I'm not sure why she and Sutton were different, but it made a nice change to see a loco's face at Tenterden level crossing when the train was in the station!

Very handsome engines, in my opinion.

Thanks, that's very interesting. Do I have your permission to use these on a website or something like that?

Thanks, that's a nice little nugget of information

Believe she left the KESR in 1984, together with the two Manning Wardles, bound for the North Woolwich Museum. I did hear that the three engines never actually made it into the museum, but were stored on an industrial site locally. That could well be a misunderstood comment, though.

The date 1984 sounds familiar. And the two Manning Wardles, I believe, were 1762 'Dolobran' and 2009 'Rhyl', both ex S&L, both of which are now at the GCRN. I wonder if there are any other locos which have effectively been based at the same sheds, both in working and preserved life, for so long...

That's interesting that they might never have made it to the museum in North Woolwich, I'll have to do a bit of digging round and see if I can uncover any clarification. Where did you hear that?

That's half the problem. If I could remember, I'd be a happy man!

My, very similar, photos are dated May 1969. They didn't hang around that long and I'm fairly certain they had recently been taken out of service. Need to check with the appropriate Tonks volume.

It looks like winter or spring from the colour of the vegetation. I was at university in Nottingham until June 69 so it may have been earlier that year. It was a long time ago! The locos in the shed were both to the Manning Wardle/Kitson/ RSH design I think and one at least still bore it's nameplate, possibly 'Conway'. The boilerless frame with wheels in my photo looks like an 'Ugly'.

I've looked at the Tonks volume and the numbers don't quite tally. I think I count 5 'Uglies'in the photo but only 4 were preserved from there unless 60 returned from Market Overton where Tonks reports it was transferred in 1962? The rest seemed to have been scrapped in 1967.

I visited in about September 1992 (rather bizarrely, paid to go there as a then very new London Underground trainee, to look at an old District Line carriage). There was a patch of private land close (possibly adjacent) to the museum on which the longer term restoration projects were stored including the Manning Wardles, however 56 was parked in the platform along with another smaller saddle tank whose ID escapes me. Both appeared to be in working order. The Y5 was displayed on the turntable.

What is this Tonks volume you speak of? Could be a useful source of information...

Thanks, that is another date in the timeline added!

I seem to recollect, 62, I think being based at Bury Transport Museum for a time in the early 1980s, but by the time the line reopened as the ELR in 1987 it had gone

It moved to the NYMR in late '83/early '84 and saw a certain amount of use there but by the end of '84 its owner had sold it to Dave Milham and it had moved to Isfield.

Somewhere I've got a photo taken whilst waiting for the Woolwich Ferry of the Manning Wardles, probably around 1994, at the time these, 56 and a Peckett painted in 'Ford' colours belonged to a friend of my Dad, the Y5 belonging to Flour Mill. The Peckett did get steamed now and again, in fact I had a clack stick open in the station one Sunday morning. At one time, probably mid/late 1990's I drove an Aveling and Porter road engine from Canary Wharf down to North Woolwich museum.
