The "wibble" as you call it has been blown completely out of proportion by those who enjoy doing so. The (minor) point was that the train's name conjured up a strong image of Pullmans and that another name might have been better. Those at RYTC should know that the choice of name, etc., may have an impact on potential bookings. HOWEVER, just because some comments have been made on that topic does not detract in the slightest from the very obvious over-riding issue of the return of 35018. Any petulance from those claiming that those daring to comment on some details obviously would prefer no train than a mis-named one, is, frankly, childish and unhelpful. In short; don't think that peoples' comments on detail mean that anyone is losing sight of the bigger picture.

One other thing of note here is that on Tuesday 9th July, and Wednesday 10th July, Victoria Station will witness two instances of trains hauled by Merchant Navy locomotives , 52 years since the last fires dropped on Southern steam , and it will be two different members of the class. something not possible since 35005 came off the main line.

I don't consider myself making a petulant or childish point even if you do; just somewhat puzzled to the point of exasperation as to why that detail seemed to irk some of the posters on here. As you correctly suggest, it certainly implied to me a loss of proportion, and seemed like something rather petty to complain about from the perspective of one who was on the train and enjoying the day.

Anyway, having looked that problem squarely in the face, let us now pass on to tomorrow's run, which I hope will be equally good.

Of course I did. He couldn't care less. I paid over £100 quid for the trip (which I'm sure to you isn't a vast sum but it is to me). Its not the first time West Coast have turned out poor stock on a trip I've been on.

The train manager couldn't even get the announcements right on the way home. He was reading from Tuesday's script.

There isn’t a ban on steam it’s just that a MN is out of gauge so that will apply to BIL. According to RTT it’s SL all the way

My favourite location! It's also the closest railway location to my home . . .

Fully agree, the name suggested pullman stock which it wasn't. That was debated, I was one of those who asked for clarification as the picture on the tour ops' website (RYTC) and the name were in conflict as to what the stock might be. To suggest that I, and others, were therefore anti the train running because the coaches were maroon is a load of utter codswallop. I saw BIL stored at Portland in such a very sorry state that it makes the Barry picture above look like it was merely uncleaned and ready to go off shed. She looked fantastic on the 6th and will do so again tomorrow. The cake was iced - it just lacked candles, but I can certainly live without candles and still enjoy the cake!

I suspect the gauging has been reviewed, as it is on mainlines every few months.
Apparently the conditions of travel show 20mph Basingstoke Down Main 47m65ch.

Clan Line used to do Victoria to Salisbury with the Pullmans, on one tank of water. Perhaps WCRC are being more cautious?

    Cheers, Neil

Not my footage but definitely P2. 35028 went through the London end of the station at 10mph (gauging restriction IIRC) during 2017’s Bournemouth Belle, and I’d hazard a guess that was about 10mph at the London end of the platform.

Derailed freight train somewhere in the Stewart's Lane area (either at or in close proximity to signal VC223)has been reported with delays to services in and out of VIC expected to last til the end of the day. Hopefully BIL will make it in and out okay.

35022 did Waterloo to Yeovil Jct on one tank easily twice in 1965 but then it didn’t spend hours doing very little but use water before leaving London. Anyway Andover is unusual as beyond Winchfield it’s normally Overton or Grateley. Maybe at the special request of the eponymous David?

Chalk and cheese. Waterloo to Yeovil (122 miles) was non-stop with water taken only a few miles from the starting point and time in steam between water stops about 3 hours. Today is somewhat different. Only about 70 miles from Victoria but, assuming water wasn't taken en route from Southall, about 6 hours between water stops.

Anyway, let's hope for a good day and there is always a diesel to ease the strain if necessary. Not that it seemed all that active on the previous trip.
