See, that makes more sense "it says on the drawing we need these new-fangled lamp irons here, here and here, so they can have them, but we only need to put lamps on the bottom 3, so do those properly."

There's a shot of 48431 in service (in the Alan Warren book on Barry Scrapyard locos, if I remember correctly) entering Snow Hill on a freight. She has a GWR-style lamp mounted sideways on the upper lamp iron!

It is great to see how this locomotive is coming together - literally and physically!

At the Great Gathering 82045 was certainly popular and it proved a financially successful trip. Thanks to all who donated or purchased clothing and items.

"Unfortunately the BR drawings which show the vacuum and carriage warming pipework are rather lacking in dimensions, there is nothing to detail a length of straight pipe and radius of bends, etc."
Fascinating. Are there any known differences between the locos?

Unless they were all done by the same chap, there must have been some shared understanding of how it was done. I wonder if there is a missing drawing, an annotated packet of woodbines, or just a set of rules of thumb that explain the layout to a skilled operative?

Quite often, those sorts of details are “made to fit” (which is why the people doing the job were called “fitters”). So few or no drawings required, but those doing the job would have long experience of what was needed.

When Beachy Head was constructed, the team made complete pipework diagrams for the steam, vacuum and air systems between the frames, as no original drawings existed. Primarily that was because they adopted a build order in which much of the pipework was fitted quite early in the process, before the boiler was fitted, so it could be done from above rather than below in a pit. So drawings were necessary to ensure a pipe fitted early in the build wouldn’t interfere with something due to be fitted years later. In LBSCR days, the fitters would simply have got on with the job, but nearer the end of the process of erection.

I have heard of an instance where a new cab had mounting bolt-holes drilled 'as shown on the drawing'. Needless to say, the holes on the framing didn't match.:Wasntme:

In my time with internal combustion engines it was the other way round. A fitter was someone who simply fitted parts others had made, but a mechanic had engineering skills to modify or even fabricate.

We have found similar in the case of 76077. If we build something to the drawings and drill the fixing holes it’s very likely it won’t fit and the holes need opening out . Currently doing similar to 82045 and progressing the vac piping up into the cab. As with all standards it’s a plumbers nightmare!
