Well, I DO have an 8mm cine film sequence (shot from half way up Whernside) of a Britannia, heading a railtour, pausing for several minutes to raise steam at alongside Blea Moor loop and someone, believed to be a linesider, climbing up from the trackside onto the front of the loco to throw off the headboard that it was carrying, into the four-foot, before the train set off again! Perhaps that one ended up in the infant River Ribble therabouts?

Another trademark late posting, of photos taken from this weekends trip.

Many thanks go to Alberta 45562 for providing the details of the location just outside of Barnsley suggested earlier in this thread. After witnessing and hearing the display the two 5's gave climbing up the 1 in 50, lets say im glad i travelled up north from northants!

Well, no-one at all was making any visible attempt to restrain the guy concerned from "over-reacting" .... indeed, from what I also recall (after 40-plus years), the large group with him at the lineside did appear to be congratulating him.

I will make no further comment on that, but, to finally draw this diversion from the thread to a close, I think the point here is that we all have differing views in respect of headboards and the dubious authenticity of the majority thereof. It is an inescapable fact that, as with loco and rolling stock liveries, we are never all going to agree on any aspect of it all, so, let's but hope that, in future, an element of common sense does prevail.

Regarding the "Tin Bath Extra" itself, my sincere thanks must go out to all of those concerned for organising the event in the first place. The weather wasn't the best last Sunday, but it was, nevertheless, an enjoyable day out for most of us, in the "Summer Wine" hills .... this, despite the fact that the train didn't actually reach Holmfirth itself!

Let's further hope that this particular itinerary does become a regular feature in the steam calendar and that, if a headboard really HAS to be used, a more appropriate one can be produced.

OK, I can live with that, I thought your postings about throwing it in the river etc. were........."unfortunate". My own view? If I can watch a steam tour blasting up Miles Plating, they can nail a plank of wood to the smokebox door if they want. I won't have any objections.

Saturday 3rd August 1959 ... I remember it well!! A very colourful 41101 on a Daily Mirror special from Manchester Victoria to Blackpool Central. Fotted that one as well, incidentally!!

What did I make of the livery? Aye, well, I was but a mere lad half a century ago and even diesels were attractive to us kids in those days, so 41101's appearance merely caused amusement and hilarity to all the trainspotters who had turned out to witness it that day. (How times have changed!!)

The 4-4-0 (a 24J Green Ayre engine) was withdrawn immediately upon arrival back at Newton Heath shed and, No 1000 apart, was the very last of its class to be seen working to the Fylde Coast and, as I recall, also being the last of its type at Lancaster, had not seen much use for some time before then.

The large circular headboard? Almost 'till the end of steam, such things were relatively commonplace on locos working company annual outings to the seaside and, thus, quite accepted as a consequence. A small number of crack main-line expresses also bore the more conventional headboards in post-war years, but the big Pacific 'namer' itself and the distinctive carriage roofboards were what passengers and spotters alike really noticed.

Only time I noticed a headboard on a pair of Black Fives was on a northbound diverted 'Royal Scot' seen at Crewe and about sent via the Lanky Union and Ribble Valley lines onto the S&C.

'Jacobite' headboard on the 'Tin Bath'? Can't say that I was ever "outraged" by it (as SpamCan81 seems to feel some of us were) .... perhaps more on the lines of being merely curious as to why it had appeared and why there seemed to have been felt a real necessity to stick anything on the front at all anyway.

Maybe I was using the word "outraged" a bit tongue in cheek but then again I wasn't responsible for the posts calling those responsible for the headboard "a buffoon" or hoping it had been "thrown in a river." From a personal viewpoint when I'm on a steam special I don't care what the headboard is as I can't see it from the train and when I'm on the lineside I'm happy for the operator/loco owner to put what he likes on the front. It's nice if the headboard is appropriate for the route but it's not the end of the world if it isn't.

I like the shot of them leaving Blackburn,well done. Only thing i would suggest is that you cut about 15 seconds off the start time until they can be heard
