    Having looked at this thread it seems not to tell the full story the following is logged on the network rail system.

    60019 passed a signal at danger on Saturday in Waterloo station and ran through a set of points. According to Network Rail incident log the driver states the signalman gave him permission to start ahead of the signal. A total of 224 trains were delayed causing 2543 minutes delay.

    Oh dear. Not looking good for one party or the other then. I suppose selfishly we'll have to hope it's not the driver of the tour that's at fault, as that looks like a hefty fine for delay in the offing.

    That seems to tie up with what I have been told. I did not want to state it here as I don't know the full facts, although I understand that Network Rail accepted responsbility and the driver was cleared of any blame (which was why the train was eventually allowed to continue).

    Spot on David.
    At Salisbury, I put my hand on the rods at the centre axle (a routine check) and found each to be too warm. After another check at Basingstoke, I believe the diesel provided assistance so that the rods weren't being driven too hard. It doesn't completely solve the problem, as they are still moving and thus able to get warm themselves, but it helps.

    I have been talking to several of my contacts on this matter and have been given the following definitive statement.

    'The train on Saturday was involved in an operational incident. Any allegation of a SPAD was swiftly dismissed after a downloading of the voice recording tapes. This meant that the train was then able to depart once the route had been made safe by the endeavour of the local Network Rail team. The opportunity was also taken to route the train via Surbiton to minimise overall delay and look forward to the afternoon. This allowed time in Exeter and an ontime departure of the return'

    I hope this will end the supposition and ill informed comments regarding the SPAD and/or driver error, and any other assumptions regarding the tour.

    Sounds to me like Network Rail did everything they could to make up for an operational error on their side, which is fair play to them.
