After the great performances of 45305 on the Cumbrian Mountain Expresses, does anyone know why the engine no longer appears to carry the nameplates of 'Alderman AE Draper'

Are there any chances of a diesel being put on the back of 70013's run to assist this Saturday due to fire risk?

Is it that dry in Cumbria? OK so in the Lancs/Cheshire area we have not had any rain for a couple of weeks but I would not have thought there was much fire risk yet.

I'm not sure to be honest. I had read in a few places and also saw that the diesel was helping on the back of the Auld Reekie going up Shap last Saturday due to fire risk.

There has been a fair few moorland fires in Wales of late with the local fire crews working overtime, so I would say fire risk is now a very real issue. Given the continuing dry conditions and abundance of dead undergrowth from last year, this time of year can cause real issues.

Phil, that's a new angle on Whalley viaduct and it makes a good shot.

    Ian, 2 very crisp shots.....

Thanks to both of you for getting out there... I was on gardening duties.

Many thanks Ralph. It turned out there was a diesel on the back, I assume due to fire risk? I understand the hour late running heading north was an issue with a carriage?

Just back from this final WCME with Ollie in charge, which turned out to be another eventful day. First we had problems with the stock at Carnforth - appeared to be the POB coupling - then we were informed that, at Network Rail's insistance, we were going to have to take a diesel ( a 37) because of the high fire risk. So, after an hours extra wait in the loop we finally got the road at 12.22. I think the crews must have been told to take things easy as well because we had a leisurely ascent of Grayrigg followed by a fairly high speed run to Tebay and then a steady climb to Shap; the 37 on the back doing little more than shifting itself.

The stop at Carlisle was cut short so we could depart at booked time, we then had a steady climb to Ais Gill in some sunny but cool weather and the same on Wilpshire. All in all, a good day with Ollie but, by his own standards (!) a very subdued one.

    Alan. :)
