Don't forget a B1 is also cleared for 75mph, a big advantage on today's busy railway.

with 45596, 45690, 45699, 61264, 61306 and 73096, 75mph class 5's might start putting a bit of pressure on the business of 60mph certified black 5s in a few years

Especially as 45690 now looks like a Black 5...

This livery of 45690 is going to go on I'm afraid. I was just thinking that BR Blue earlier today would have been really nice .

Jubilees are class 6 or are they only rated as a 5 on the modern railway?

it's says 6P on the tin, but when built it was 5XP..

    isn't a Jubilee just a Black 5 with a bit of extra acceleration ?

Wiki says : 26,610 lb TE for a Jubilee vs 25,455lb for a Black 5..
Jubilees have slightly bigger wheels where as Black 5s have bigger Cylinders.

So if it were a bloke, I guess a Jubilee is a 6ft with trainers, vs a 5'8 with shoes...

LMS power classifications differed slightly from BR. The LMS Pacifics were 7P but became 8P under the BR system. IIRC the Scots were 6P under LMS but 7P under BR. So the Jubs were classed 5XP as they were more than a 5 but less than a 6 under the LMS system but became a 6 under BR.

When I went to pay for my place on the lottery syndicate at work today the guy who runs it worked out that if we won the Euro millions tonight we would each get £4 million. He asked me what I would buy and I instantly thought of 45231 at the top of my shopping list......... So fingers crossed for tonight:D

Yes, but the Jubilees had three of them against the Black 'uns' two.

  11. I believe the Black gives were referred to by crews as 'baby jubilees'. There was a black five runnin at the KWVR steam spectacular last weekend, 45305. Picture on

No, the only babies were the rebuilt Patriots. These were called baby Scots.

Never heard that one. On a comparison basis, most crews preferred a Black 'un anyway. Such a derogatory term is most unlikely.

I suppose the lack of a Black 5 was a bit of a gap in the collection!

How soon before another gets added, given their versatility, especially when paired?
