It would be much more to the point to close the railway and sell everything for scrap while passengers used their own cars to go from A to B. Somewhere along the line you seem to have rather missed the point about what product heritage railways...

Robin - you need to remember that on Nat Pres, talking about ticketing from direct operational experience as a guard, TTI, booking office clerk or ex- Charity trustee with finance responsibility affords no particular understanding of the issue....

One other factor I’ve been mulling over. Computers and computer controlled systems do have the amazing knack of crashing at the most inopportune moments. Short of yanking it off the wall, I’m not sure you can crash a rack of proper Edmondson...

This is foolishness of the first water. If we slice away bits of the ‘old’ railway that we find inconvenient, what is there left? Let’s run a DMU from a concrete windswept platform with staff dressed in jeans and a logo-emblazoned windcheater...

Railway clocks have a place but it's in a museum. They are not an obsession shared by every enthusiast, just as railways are not an obsession by every member of the public. Steam locomotives have a place but it's in a museum. They are not an...

As a minor contribution to this debate I offer snaps of my tickets from the Bluebell opening to East Grinstead and of the GWSR to Broadway. You can see which one I chose to have framed. (T’was a bit of a special number, mind.) Not providing...

That's not my experience - either with National Rail or heritage lines that print tickets on demand, doing so is inevitably considerably slower than taking an Edmondson ticket from a rack. Standing in line as departure times approaches fretting...

Took a long while for the penny to drop but you got there in the end. :) The IoWSR will have had its own reasons for ditching Edmonton tickets but for someone who makes much of how heritage railways should strive for authenticity, I’m surprised...

AHHH! That explains everything! Edmondson tickets have been dispensed with on the Isle of Wight, therefore they are unnecessary and a waste of money everywhere else.

Because PH invariably gets into a hole and then keeps digging deeper rather than shut up or, shock, horror, admit he is wrong.

Let's be honest, I suspect @paulhitch just likes a good argument and disagreeing with people. Nobody is suggesting that Edmonson tickets are all that matters to passengers by a long chalk, but that they form an important part of the overall...

Why do you keep insisting that it is an either / or? Do you suppose railways say "we were going to clean the carriages, but decided to issue Edmondson tickets instead"? Far more likely that attention to detail begets attention to detail, i.e. a...

the whole day out for Joe Public should be , as far as possible, a step back into another world, to entertain and educate. Rolling up at an authentic booking window (where you have to stoop to talk to the Clerk no doubt) and be able to watch your...
