A shaft that is 8.25 inch one end and 9.62 at the other that transmits pure torque will have specific stresses that are 1.58 times higher at the small diameter. Pure torsion overload cannot have been the only reason for P2 trouble I think.

I have realised that two twenty inch outside cylinders 6 feet 8 apart will not allow plus minus 1 inch lateral movement of first driver ,but three 17 inch is OK for the full KH

We know quite well how much well made two step compounds improve steam consumption in Post Chapelon machinery. He tried, but not desperate,to even work between high pressure and low pressure cylinders in four cylinder compounds. In three cylinder...

Bulleid could have made a much better job and cheaper as well by doing a Hymek like Heisler variant. A boiler instead of Diesel engine and a V2 compound engine instead of torque converter reduction gearbox.

A 9f high speed version with 3 cylinders would have had lateral space for Krauss Helmholtz/Zara truck up front and then 120 kmh was scheduled in france for Chapelon 141P. Nearly 20000 German ,Polish ,Check and russian 2-10-0s had it as well.

He patented conjugated gear that only could benefit three cylinder simples with drive to second set of driver. He patented a double swing link pony trukc

As I see it Gresley started selecting three cylinders for everything because then there would be a crank shaft, and if there was a a crankshaft it should be second driver to protect it from abuse from rails and then valve gear becomes difficult...

It was due I think to tradition.Drivers should not revolve faster than 5 revolutions per second from two cylinders. If it has three or four cylinders it can without much trouble do 7 revolutions per second. Seven feet wheels turning 5 or 5 feet...

I would commit murder for reading that paper. Is there a link somewhere? My ideal 6P has a single low pressure cylinder between frames . Within UK loading gauge there can be a 20 inch outside high pressure cylinder going to driver 2 or 3 . If...

Gresley and Bulleid were once taken by a Nord 141 tank with Cossart valves built 1933 to Paris in failed Pacific time and was wildly impressed. The Nord tank had some special external balancing that made 1600mm drivers 6.5 rev per second in daily...

If boiler and chassis are mated for life it means no narrow firebox down between plate frames. That was stated explicitly by mr Witte after WW2 in germany. The best economy steam engine within Stephenson format is a two-cylinder compound with...

Standard steam locomotives is good growing egoes but not for railways. As I read Cox he was no believer in it himself, but honoured of course being their chosen designer. Cox explains that steam locomotives are intended to be used an awfull lot...
