I can help you there!! The 76075-79 group that were sent new to 8G in 1956/57 were built with boilers supplied from Swindon. As you state, when 77 went to Eastleigh it surrendered its Swindon boiler and was mated with boiler no 1052 which was a...

If the slew is at the bottom of a gradient and now leads the main into the yard area where people work, you would disconnect to protect them, because any rail movement beyond the slew that has a brake failure or a slide etc etc is going to arrive...

That’s interesting thanks. Regarding stay length don’t forget that the two new boilers were said to have increased water space gap, to improve stay flexibility, at the expense of a slightly reduced grate area. However, looking at the...

The 2 piece stays are pretty much what the 'New' boilers have, but with some differences, Flannery's diagram shows the cup simply seam welded to the wrapper, but in order to comply with British standards the welds need to be 'prepped' and full...

I think UK Railtours deserve some credit for managing the situation, the arrival back at York was just 15 minutes down, an on time departure from there followed and the return to Finsbury Park was just 6 minutes late, whatever the mishap and...

Exactly. That was my interpretation of the pictures that I’ve seen. To be honest I’ve not seen the assembly process, but those covers have to be welded.

Meiningen don't appear to use screw caps; they appear to be welded. In fact, they must be welded as there is no way of turning them.

All in all, I think UKRT made the best of a bad hand didn't they. Looking at videos on line there is nothing to suggest any issue with the loco dropping onto the stock at York, plus I don't really understand why, as some posts online suggest, if...

I'm not quite sure what you are referring to here but on Bulleid boilers the U shape is visible externally even though the effect is internal. It looks very different to the more normal flat sectioned foundation ring bar. Here is the U shaped...

AFAIK the fkexibles are welded inside but the outside is a radiused head able to swing slightly with lateral movement of the plate. This is sealed by the welded domed cover you see.

Other than seeing an inverted shot showing the bottom of the foundation ring I doubt you can tell?

Just to pose another question for which only a poke around will probably answer - the new boiler(s) are supposed to have increased water spaces ( and therefore a slightly smaller inner firebox, and also grate area) - is this evidenced on the photos ?

Although only indirectly relevant to this thread, York has seen an abundance of steam working in the lead up to Christmas this year. Appropriately this has included all four types of LNER pacific, as seen here: [ATTACH] [ATTACH] [ATTACH] Not a...

Work has continued with four floor sheets installed and stanchion repairs completed. The underframe has been prepped and mostly painted together with the headstocks. The first of the side sheet repairs has started. [ATTACH] [ATTACH] [ATTACH]
