I'm not quite sure what you are referring to here but on Bulleid boilers the U shape is visible externally even though the effect is internal. It looks very different to the more normal flat sectioned foundation ring bar. Here is the U shaped...

Although only indirectly relevant to this thread, York has seen an abundance of steam working in the lead up to Christmas this year. Appropriately this has included all four types of LNER pacific, as seen here: [ATTACH] [ATTACH] [ATTACH] Not a...

Less than 12 hours after the double headed exploits of 61306 and 71000 last night, it was 34028's turn to visit Haywards Heath. Came in on Platform 2 today, rather than the usual Platform 1 that stopping steam tours use. The second was a...

Here's my pictures from this evening. Firstly at Preston Park and then Haywards Heath, although they're a bit blurry. Quite a few out to see it, including a few families at Preston Park. A bit of shoving from the Diesel departing Haywards Heath,...

Given the unusual nature of having 3 steam locos (61306/71000 on today's Saphos trip and 34028 on tomorrow's RTC trip) visiting Haywards Heath within 14 hours, I've decided to head out to see 34028 tomorrow morning, so I can finally see her on...

Dan, looking at the current track diagrams, the up loop at Haywards Heath has two signals. One as you say is at the north end of Platform 4 and the other is at the loop exit out at Copyhold Junction. If it appears that the signal at the end of...

I know HH has changed considerably since I grew up there in the 1960s but Platform 4 is still on the up loop which extends nearly a mile to Copyhold Junction. Thats plenty of room to get the longest train in clear of the main line in the rear. OK...

Maybe, but is there a need to do this? It seems that at present all the necessary equipment that is needed to operate the current curtailed service is already at Pickering. Lets give them time to assess the situation and formulate the way...

I agree Steve, it doesn't look like a U shaped "foundation ring" - it looks more like the foundation ring on Tornado's boiler when it returned from Germany in 2011 after its first overhaul as seen here [ATTACH] [ATTACH] Peter

In other words Bridge 42 is closed to all traffic with immediate effect, with the result that Grosmont is cut of from the rest of the line. Trains will still run from Pickering to Goathland. Fortunately the Santa trains are only operating from...

Not quite, the rule book has procedures in place to follow when a safety system fails in service so you can carry on. What you can’t do however is enter service or start a new journey with such a fault.

Just thought I'd post these two photos taken by me 60 years ago today, Decenber 11th 1965, on the WCML at Charnock Richard. 70021 on a southbound van train and 48363 0n a southbound freight.

And some of us got very excited on seeing D/Ls 10202 and 10203 passing Bromley South on the Arrer sometime back in the vague past. Presumably one did not have enough power otherwise it would have needed a kettle on the rear!

D/L was a common railway abbreviation back in steam days, as shown here in a page from a weekly STN (Special Traffic Notice) from the last week of April 1965, six weeks before steam ended on the SR Central Section. [ATTACH] Some of us dinosaurs...
