I saw a picture today opf a GWR 2-6-2t taken in 1912.It was described as a 3101 class number 2197(sic).Had flat side tanks very like a 45xx with number plates in the centre of them, didnt look like the 3150/5101/61xx family....had long front platform with shallow angular step up to running plate. The description doesnt sound quite right to me, any info?

3101 was the original number series of what became the 44XX class I believe.

that makes sense...this one was no 2197 though....im wondering in that case if it was actually something like 97 and a prototype 44xx, later renumbered 4400...does that make any sense? Cant see the number in the photo.

This page of the Great Western Archive, '3100' tank class details: 3100, 3111 - 3190 gives some details about the large prarie tanks.

I have scaned throught the Lots built by the GWR at the back of Russell's book and cannot find one with a number series containing 2197. I have found information on a asorbed loco numbered 2197, but this wasn't taken into stock until 1922 and refers to a 0-6-0T loco.

Is the photo on the web or only in print?

I have downloaded a full list of GWR loco lot No's which says the prototype No 4400 was originally No. 115.
I would like to upload the list onto here, but it is in Microsoft Excel format & the forum won't let me upload it. Can't see any mention of any 2197 though.

Could it have been an early 45XX numbered 2187?
