It might be more than a few. The more easily people from other parts of the country can join a trip and get home afterwards, the larger the potential market. I've done many trips starting from most of the London termini and a few starting from Tyseley or Birmingham, but very very few starting further north. Winter CMEs work well, starting with electric traction from Euston and picking up at several places. How about (just for instance) Euston-Carnforth with electric, Carnforth-Shap-Newcastle with steam, Newcastle-Kings Cross electric?

Straight away you increase the complexity of the operation, three loco's doing one way trips, all adding to the costs. But suggest it to RTC, you never know.

Thanks very much Alan and Shep, much appreciated. 45690 certainly looked the part, and I'll not dwell on how much slower she was than 5043 which I filmed from the same location :Banghead:

Jubilee - Class 5XP. Castle - Class 7P. Not surprising the Castle was faster. Were the loads the same?

5043 plus 10 Coaches plus 47 not working. The late Mike Notley in the cab of the 47 recorded that 5043 had an edhp of 2030 for the last mile.

I read that and thought "Why wasn't I on that?", then realised that it was because I did both the Plymouth trips, on 9th and 1oth. I hope RTC do it again, or something similar.

As Linesider's post #72 indicates, this is as probably much about homage to Swindon products as it is about Ais Gill performance metrics. But just to underscore Paul42's reminder of the fantastic/ almost unprecedented performance that the Earl delivered on 2010's Pride of Swindon outing, its also worth recalling that 5043 repeated something approaching its earlier feat with its March 2012 ascent hauling VT's "Shap, Settle and Carlisle" in the charge of Driver Gordon Hodgson and with Load 11 in tow.

This, if you recall, followed the removal of 6201 at Appleby with a tender axle hot box. Fortunately, pjhliners was on hand on both this earlier occasion and on Sunday's Waverley to record and post the result on NatPres, so we have yet another direct comparison (or at least an illustration) of the contrast in Load 11 performance with 5XP and 7P haulage.

Sunday's run...."After water at Appleby we hit 51 just before Great Ormside but were down to 30 at Kirkby Stephen and 27 out of Birkett Tunnel. Half way up Mallerstang we had a short blast up to 35 at Shoregill but again speed slipped down to pass Angerholme at 29, with a minimum of 25 just before the summit."

The Earl's 2012 run..."Setting off (from Appleby) still early after a quick splash, we were doing 57 by Smardale Viaduct, 46 through Kirkby Stephen and Birkett, then accelerated up Mallerstang, making most of the climb at 50 or just under, with 48 at the summit."

(With due acknowledgement and thanks to pjhliners).

Make of that what you will. This comparison isn't intended to be partisan or particularly pro-Swindon, (although I'm sorely tempted!!); to my way of looking at this, it just illustrates what the significant difference can be (all other things being equal) between the performance of 4-6-0's with a tractive effort of 26610 lbs ft versus 31630 lbs ft. in hill-climbing conditions.

What also has to be factored in is the willingness of the owners to tell the driver to give the loco her head.

Lets remember 5029 has not had a brilliant record on the S&C certainly no better than a Jubilee if as good.
Not taking anything from 5043 a fairer comparison unfortunately not possible would be 45735/6

45231 hasn't had a turn this week so the rotation policy might apply?

Mentioned in Fellsman thread that Leander stopped for boiler repairs, unconfirmed report so who knows?!
