Not picking on you Osprey, but I wonder why so often the term 'dragged' is used when the loco concerned is in steam and invariably being piloted? Dragged to me means being hauled dead.

My understanding is that the loco is in steam to aid lubrication else the train would have to run at slower speeds [25-30 mph IIRC] therefore it is correctly descibed as being dragged / hauled by whichever locomotive is at the head of the ensemble.

Perhaps if someone involved could clear this up, does the loco usually have the regulator cracked open a bit to take some of the load?

Indeed it does Ralph, as mentioned by Fred it's done to aid lubrication purposes most importantly. Be interesting to see why DoG was being "piloted" in the first place?

Yes I realised that it is for lubrication purposes, but it seems that DBS LE movements invariably have a pilot whereas WCRC ones do not. Obviously different operational requirements.

DBS use a Diesel on LE moves to find some work for their underemployed Cl67 fleet!

At a guess it reduces water consumption being piloted??

Found out some further info Ralph over the weekend, also it's to do with crewing issues as well.

DBS LE movements do not invariably have a diesel pilot - eg 6024 Didcot-Margam on Sat 30 April. When a diesel pilot is used, it is usually due to the lack of steam crew.
