Didn't the frames and bogies of CC1 hang around at Inchicore until about 1970? That could have provided the basis for a rather interesting new build/rebuild .

The Southern was pretty well served by preservation, so as far as I can tell the last Southern class to be rendered extinct were probably the W-class 2-6-4Ts, the last of which made it well into 1964 in service. I imagine a couple of preserved railways could find a use for one of those these days. One of the Billinton K-class was still mostly intact well into 1964 as well, having been withdrawn in late 1962. Any classes that had surviving members after that still do now.

Go back into 1963 and you get to the LSWR 700 class LBSCR E2, and SR U1, probably among others. 1962 had a fairly major purge.

Didn't a Z or W tank go into store at Fratton for a while? That would have been a nice big beast to have pound up somewhere like Goathland bank!

Quite a few UTA Locos were shipped to Spain for scrapping I recall.

Agreed. UTA 58 (ex GNRI 208 "Lagan") made it to December 1965!
Three of the 1948 U class UTA 66/7/8 (ex GNRI 201/2/5 "Meath" "Louth"&"Down") lasted till May 1965.
Here's a photo of classmate 203 "Armagh". Pity this one isn't in colour. The GNRI blue looked good on them.

Mmmmm.... Now do I, just for the hell of it, point out that the Ivatt modifications effectively render the last 2 Coronations a distinct (and extinct) sub-class .... or gracefully concede the point? :D

The whole idea of the Z was that it would be strong enough to not have to 'pound' anywhere, and sufficiently under-boilered that it could only sustain such exertion for short periods - qualities ideal for its intended duties as a heavy shunter, but perhaps not so good for Goathland bank.

A W would have been quite well suited though.

Indeed. I have a list of those .... somewhere (!!) Unfortunately, in any event, they all succumbed in fairly short order.

The second option before the whole point of the thread disappears in a cloud of favourite Locos I'd like to have seen preserved. A new thread however would be of interest

I've been trying to find a photo I saw quite recently of the main frame (I think on bogie runners) in the yard at Inchicore. IIRC this last bit of CC1 wasn't broken up until 1975. It may have been an issue of SR or HR. Without boiler bogies or draughting gear, it would have made for a 'challenging' restoration job!

So many classes lasting into the 60s on the CIE were worthy of preservation. Top of my list would've been the lovely little ex- MGWR 2-4-0 (later, class G2) and the 4-6-0t 'Bandon Tank' (class B4). But these all went pre-1965, and unless we're expanding the lkst worldwide, I suspect they're beyond the intended remit of this thread.

Irish railways are so closely related to British railways that they are always acceptable in my view, especially Bandon tanks. I am a little biased though

Not at all sure I could bear to look at those. The GNRI had a knack of producing well proportioned and fine looking locos.... as well as being good performers. Most of the six coupled freight designs could double for passenger turns (often excursion services) pretty well too.

I believe that Met 1 was not the first choice for preservation. IIRC the original intention was to preserve a Metropolitan Railway F class 0-6-2T loco.

Haven't seen anything in SR about it, although it's something I would like to learn a bit more about, I know @Reading General mentioned steam loco's in his OP but I still find it disappointing LMS 10000 or 10001 wasn't saved, didn't they survive until about 1965/6? Could you imagine the draw they'd be today?
