Looks like an RSH 'Ugly' 0-6-0st, they have been at many locations from the Worth Valley to Bodmin and points in between(and elsewhere!), so take your choice :)

well, it would have been 1980 or earlier if that narrows it down. Swanage perhaps? K&ESR?

I don't recall either of those lines having one.

Well, from that shortlist, Bluebell has no level crossing gates, neither does Quainton.

I'm sure the KESR had an Ugly in the 70s. Whatever it was, it was a big 0-6-0ST but not an Austerity.

Its the KESR, Tenterden. At a guess on santa special (headboard and sunlight) late 1970s.

I believe the engine is Ugly (Corby?) 56 now at GCRN. Was number 26 on the KESR.

I wonder how many railways have had one of these RSH's on their books at some time? (excluding mere gala visits.)
56, 57, 60, 62 & 63 survive. 57, 62 & 63 started off on the Worth Valley and the NYMR had 62 for a short while but I think it was at Bury before that.

I'd just dug out photo to post to confirm it was an Ugly but no need now.

Had a fabulous run behind 57(?) in the early 1970s. Sounded like an 8F on steroids.

Definitely 56. The red running plate is a dead giveaway.

The witness lines on the bunker that show where platework repairs are, are very distinctive and indicate that the loco is RSH 56 Class, No56. The loco went from the K&ESR to North Woolwich to Ruddington, and the level crossing is not Asher Lane on the GCRN so its a fair assumption that it is on the K&ESR. Both 56 and 63 are at the GCRN at Ruddington, 63 currently servicable, 56 subject to evaluation of firebox repair options. Excellent locos, free steaming and very powerful, comfortably capable of the equivalent of 8 Mk1's and a 20 mile round trip on the water in the tank, 60 miles plus on a bunker of coal.

Thanks, I wish I had taken more, as I guess do a lot of photographers but it is amazing looking back how expensive photography seemed at the time.

That was the deciding factor for many of us - the cost of film and processing. It's so different now in the digital age.
