Wagons in need of a new start in the New Year

The Foxfield Railway has got a vast collection of heritage wagons, but these are rapidly falling victim of the ravages of time and weather. A survey of the collection is being undertaken with a view to identifying those are particular risk after which we will be looking for people to get involved in wagon restoration and overhauls. If you are interested in getting involved in this project please let me know and I will pass your interest on to the relevant persons.

So remember, wagons are for life, not just for christmas!

 

Last time I visited I had a walk down the hill toward the mainline, where there were a couple of rough looking wagons. Are these part of the foxfield collection? Just thought it a bit odd seeing them there.

that must have been 5 years ago now though, been saying ever since that I'll visit again. must do it again next year!

 

Yes, there a few items that were put down in the old exchange sidings years ago, trouble is the line down to them is now so badly deteriorated that it may not be possible to recover them. They have become rather forgotten down there but if someone showed the right interest...
For now there are sidings to finish off at the colliery to allow storage of the minerals and hoppers and people talking about raising funds to deal with the dreaded tinworm!

 

Does foxfield have any plans to restore the line down to the exchange sidings? In the long term obviously, as you've got alot on your plate at the colliery, somewhere I need to visit soon.

 

Yes it's on the list but, as you say, well down on the priorities. Lack of manpower is the main issue and the same reason we have yet to get passenger trains down to the colliery.

 

Yes we know that feeling all to well. Fingers crossed 2016 is a good year for you.

Waggons are often a somewhat neglected part of the transport system's heritage, especially as so much was moved by rail - not just people.

it does seem a shame that a lot of railways suffer from a lack of money and volunteers to fulfil their aims the Foxfield in my eyes is unigue watching the industrials climbing up the bank from the colliery is one of the finest sights in preservation perhaps a donate button on the website could be added so that those of us too far away to volunteer could donate to the cause as every little helps/.
