That's just as well. It took the LNERCA around 15 years to complete its first coach and it came more or less complete - although we then threw most of the interior away. If you don't even start with a body it will take that much longer - although on the other hand it will make restoration of the underframe that much easier because access will be better. I'd do that first and then make a decision on the body.

That's the plan overhaul chassis to full operation condition then if the railway need a wagon to move stuff around the site it's available and then work out what to do with the body.

Just to drag this thread out of the cobwebs. Stuart has now swapped the underframe of 45036 for LMS sleeper 617 (yes the one at the Swindon & Cricklade that's apparently full of asbestos).
    I give it 6 months.

What are the regulations about moving vehicles with this level of asbestos? I was under the impression that it would have to be professionally removed or at the very least sealed, prior to any of the haulage companies touching it?

I thought so too, although I couldn't say what the regs actually are.

Sorry to say that Stuart is approaching this in the same manner as his other 'projects' ie not listening unless you say it's great. Unfortunately his naivity and unwillingness to ask for and accept advice could very well end up costing him his life when we're talking about an asbestos contaminated vehicle.

Possibly the lives of those round him too. Not a few people have died having inhaled the odd asbestos fibre. My friend’s mother had asbestosis, probably caused when washing his father’s boilersuits.

Going to replace all missing windows first so it's watertight then move onto asbestos

In the construction industry (probably the place that deals with Asbestos the most) the sequence is to remove the asbestos before you do any other works. So in this case the correct work flow is to do the asbestos removal first, or else you risk exposing those installing the windows! If you have a need to make it water tight then that should be done from the outside with plastic sheeting etc.

Had two downpipes replaced a couple of weeks ago, both made from asbestos cement. A mere £600 for removal and disposal! I dread to think what a coach would cost to gut.

I think something got missed off the list there. First, make watertight. Second, start JustGiving appeal....

Yes agreed already his first failure. I think that Stuart really needs to think about what he is doing rather than making rash comments which show he doesn't appreciate the significance of the presence of the asbestos.

Agree! Asbestos really is a silent threat that we all need to take much more seriously; just look that the following link as a reminder of how easy it is to get exposed and end up paying the ultimate price.
