Some good news from the NYMR. Schools fans take a look at the unofficial NYMR web site.

Requires registration. Maybe you could just tell us/quote the news here?

Outshopped yesterday, a mere three weeks after the boiler went back into the frames. Steam test booked for Friday.

I last rode behind (30)926 in late 2009 - Whitby to Grosmont. Nice to see her back. She'll ease the burden on the Whitby 'pool' too. Well done to all concerned.

One question though - the NYMR 'blurb' suggests that she spent time at Barry before going into Eastleigh in 1966 for overhaul and shipment to the USA. Now, as far as I'm aware, 4F 43924 was the first 'escapee' from Barry, back in 1968, so where has this story about Repton come from?

I thought the idea of this site was to share news and to discuss/debate - I didn't think the idea was to send users to other sites unnecessarily. I would also prefer not to have to register on every railways website/forum just to read the latest news. Plenty of railways manage to maintain pictures and news stories on their websites and Facebook/Twitter/Blogspot without the need for every visitor to register.

Anyway, back on topic, congrats to the NYMR - she looks great

News to me too, I think there is some crossed wires somewhere as Repton never went any near Barry. Happy to be proved wrong though.

I wish they had cut down the tender back to original height. Last time I rode behind her it was during a high fire risk so we had a 25 thrashing away with the engine doing next to nothing. Still she looks verrrrry nice.

So is it too early to hope that with Stowe also under overhaul, and Cheltenham with 5 years left we will get to see all three running together at some time in the future.

James, do you know what livery Stowe is going to return in? It would be nice to see a schools in one of each livery... which means BR green or black please ;) because we just don't have enough BR black locos.

There are sound operational reasons for keeping tender as it is even if it does look a bit funny. Part of me wishes that they'd gone the whole hog and reinstated the American headlamp and cowcatcher too.

Can you confirm what they sound operational reasons are? I am guessing the tender modification only provide additional coal capacity?

The benefits of the original design is the visibility when running backwards, which is very beneficial on a heritage railway where the loco spends a lot of time going backwards.

    Bleugh!
I felt contractually obliged to object to BR livery, as it is my role on this forum...
But actually I agree with your point! One of each would be very nice!

Thank goodness its out of BR livery, but oh how it would look better with the tender correct. Hopefully Stowe will appear in the same livery to show how a schools should look.

Reason enough when you consider that two Whitby-Pickering round trips equals 100 miles and that the only way of coaling a loco is by detaching it from its train at Grosmont, going up to the shed and under the coaler, running back to the station and coupling back up; a tall order on a busy day. What is the maximum distance a Schools would have run between coalings when in main line service? At a guess I'd say that it's about 75 miles from Charing Cross to Hastings.
