Someone asked me to help find some slam door Mk3s for sale, or even an InterCity set. No idea where to start...

DB regio UK own many mk3s that are stored. Might be worth approaching them?

Originally yes, but that has changed in recent years thanks to Chiltern.

The Chiltern ones have sliding doors as do the unit derived ones.

They do, and the HSTs being refurbished for Scotrail and GWR will do. But only the Irish ones were built with power doors - those over here with them were all retrofitted.

I suspect that some slam door ones might become available over the next 2 to 3 years as GWR divests itself, and as Greater Anglia loses its loco-hauled varients.

The Trust building the new P2 'Prince of Wales' have said they plan to own a rake of Mk3s - it might be worth talking to them for advice on how to go about it.

There is one Mark 3 for sale here

    http://www.carriage-exchange.org.uk/stock.htm

You can try looking at the carriage database here http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/search.asp and then approach the owner of any vehicle you are interested in. However this Database only covers preserved vehicles and as I am sure you know there are plenty of Mark 3s in daily use on the national network so they wont appear here as they arn't preserved.

Might help if you say why you want it ? is to run or as static etc ?

Contact rolling stock leasing companies who will have surplus slam door mark 3's as HST's and Norwich loco hauled sets are replaced. ( Allowing for reuse by Scotrail.)

    Cheers, Neil

The HST sets that are coming up to Scotland as I understand it, will be getting reduced to trainsets comprising 4 and 5 coaches. I know, I know, 4 coaches between two power cars, Its beyond daft, dont get me started, the 8 coaches currently used would be more than utilised between Edinburgh and Glasgow to Aberdeen and Inverness. What confuses the **** out of me is that the current 6 car 170 sets from Aberdeen are nearly always full as it is...I really must write to someone to get some answers on this...sorry for the rant...

" This aligns with the completion of Network Rail’s Highland main line journey time improvements project. 54 power cars and 121 coaches will be leased from Angel Trains. These will make up 17 five-coach trains and 9 four- coach trains with two power cars spare. The 2019 timetable will require 23 trains in service each day with five coach sets operating Central Belt to Aberdeen services and the four coach trains generally running to Inverness. The number of through services from Inverness to the Central Belt via Aberdeen will also be increased." https://www.railengineer.uk/2017/03/23/scotrails-new-hsts/

So seeing as these are all ex GWR 8 coach sets, AIUI, that leaves by my calcs in excess of 80 coaches going spare...they must be going somewhere...why not start by asking angel trains?

arrrghgh it jsut gets worse they are limiting them to 100MPH whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

These coaches are already coming out of service/store, with several going to the Mid Norfolk and Great Central Nottingham recently.

  15. I completely agree, I would have thought TF-Buffet-TSO-TSO-TSO-TGS would have made a lot more sense, even if half the TF was downgraded to Standard and the buffet area was just used as a place for the trolley staff to hang out.

That said, the acceleration of 5000-odd hp on four Mk3s is going to be interesting. Despite the gradient, southbound drivers at Usan opening up after the single line section will probably hit the ton by the next overbridge.

    Sorry, OT and NP...

Bear in mind, one whole coach is going to be 1st class AIUI. So that means its effectively 3 coaches! The mind reels...

Has any explanation been offered or asked for? Are they perhaps thinking that short trains are the easiest way (though not the best way) of dealing with short platforms at some stations?

Just one little issue to consider. The ETH is different on hauled coaches to that in HSTs. Cant remember the detail but something to consider

HSTs use 3 phase supply, whereas loco hauled use locomotive provided ETH supply. I believe that's why the MkIIIs used with 41001 are ex LHCS, not HST.

I dont think anyone has asked as yet, I really think I might.

Size is an issue with a lot of the platforms on the routes they are going to run on, but the key reason they are being introduced is 1. capacity and 2. they found out people would wait to get on a KGX from Aberdeen to Edinburgh using what was the East Coast because there was more space and it was more comfortable. This is whats driven this.

Apologies to the mods, iv clearly dragged this way off topic.
