Does anyone know if GNR1 was steamed after its few weekends of steaming at Loughborough in December 1981? I seem to remember that she was being prepared to go to an international trade show in Hannover or perhaps Hamburg early in 1982. Due to space commitments I haven't kept any magazines back to that period.

The appearances in The Railway Children at Waterloo used a smoke generator for effect and a diesel shunter for motive power.

    Thanks, Neil

It also ran on the NYMR IIRC but not sure if this was before or after her GCR visit.

A locomotive I would dearly love to see in steam, but know I never will. :(

When the loco went to Doncaster open day in 2003, I was told the smokebox door was opened so the chimney could be removed, and there was still char in there from its last steaming!

Lovely looking loco, really wish I'd been old enough to see it in steam.

Twice. Once in 1982 for an Open University programme, and again in 1985 for this:

Thanks for all your help with tracking down the activities of GNR 1 in the 1980's.
The question arose when preparing for a slide show I'm giving to the Meon Valley Loco Society in a couple of weeks time.

As an aside are there any locos which have steamed on less occasions after restoration?

    Regards, Neil

"Cheltenham" was overhauled for Rainhill, failed an ultrasonic axle test, didn't go to Rainhill, and was not steamed again until its overhaul at the MHR thirty years later.

One of those "stories down the pub" suggested that whoever did the UAT didn't realise that one axle was a crank axle for the centre cylinder ....

    Cheers, Neil

That's not my recollection of "Cheltenham's" "restoration". She was prepared for steaming at York in the spring of 1980 but did not require a retube, so her boiler was as BR withdrew her at the end of 1962. After a test run to Milford she went to Rainhill in the company of Hardwicke and Evening Star and ran as planned on all three days of the event. After that she went to Dinting for the summer but while there a couple of tubes failed so she was hauled back to York in the autumn. A year or two later plans were advanced for overhauling her boiler but it was at this stage that the suspect ultrasonic axle test reared its head and so the overhaul was deferred for about 30 years. But she definately went to Rainhill.

Here's Cheltenham on 25th May 1980 in the Rainhill procession just west of St Helens Junction station just before Mr Plod arrived

Oh, so she did. The ridiculous thing is that I rewatched the BBC broadcast of the cavalcade a couple of weeks ago.

That said, I'm fairly sure that one engine which had been booked for Rainhill had to be replaced at a late stage after failing a UAT. 80135 perhaps?
