If going for historical inaccuracy I would prefer a one off appearance in the other direction.

Damn the top feed, long cone boiler, extended smokebox etc. and give a show with Indian Red frames, scroll monogram etc.

it's trainspotteritis, once they all die off we should see more authenticity (well, I won't I guess....)

Some of the the younger generation seem quite happy with such things as a red 8F so no guarantee of any more authenticity.

Some of us old codgers didn't mind it either. When all's said and done, it's just a coat of paint and it was being used to haul passenger trains at the time!

It bemuses me that a one time freight engine in freight livery hauling a passenger train is considered more authentic than a one time freight engine in passenger livery hauling a passenger train. If you are looking at the big picture which one is better?

As this project has a 53xx and a tender already
What would a 53xx minus side tanks and bunker but plus tender look like ?
Can anyone do a line drawing or photoshop ?
Would it be better with last axle removed and run as a 2-6-0 ?

.... or just the two chassis, back to back, with a 7'-01/4" diameter boiler (in honour of IKB!) slung between 'em.

    I'll get my coat .....

    It's a 52xx. It would look similar to a 28xx or 2884 Class.

    You mean a 5200? 53XX is a 2-6-0 Tender engine.
A conversion of 4200s to tender engines with Standard 1 boilers was envisaged at one stage. Here's a drawing of my interpretation of what it might have looked like.
    280-4200astender..jpg
A conversion of the 42/52 to a 2-6-0 retaining the Standard 4 boiler would be almost exactly a 4300 with smaller wheels.

That looks neat, and quite plausible -Leaving it as a 2-6-2 would leave a long way between firebox and tender... and it would have a nice Cab - which is just not right!

Well, the former might have actually happened 'back in the day', if a freight engine was called in after a last-minute failure on the scheduled passenger engine; the latter, not so much...

authenticity didn't stop the LMS painting the Claughtons red , and if we were lucky enough to have one that could be the livery debate to end all livery debates .
when a loco has spent 2/3 of its life in preservation I would suggest authentic is whatever the current owner chooses .
an 8F in "improved engine green" would look nice
