Didn't it say in a recent Heritage Railway that if 6100 did need smoke deflectors they probably wouldn't be to the LMS pattern. It was suggested that they LMS type aren't particularly efficient. Alternatives mentioned were Brittania style or A3 style (!)

I always liked to see 46106 with the straight sided 'blinkers', even though Scots looked good with or without
    smoke deflectors IMHO.

By coincidence, 46115 was the first rebuilt Scot to be fitted with smoke deflectors, in 1947. A result of the double chimney, less fierce exhaust, and drifting smoke. The rebuilt locos were not generally fitted with deflectors until 1950.

Have to disagree about the Standard deflectors fitted to 46106. I dont think they looked the part at all.

Livery? 46115 qualifies for the post-war express livery of gloss black with maroon and straw lining, but other liveries carried experimentally by the Scots included 46139 in LNER green and 46121 in black with LNWR style lining.

On the subject of 46100 and crimson livery, Jenkinson in "The Power of the Royal Scots" sums it up neatly by saying "This engine is now preserved at Bressingham in a spurious version of the pre-war LMS crimson lake". Enough said I think.

Great to see her on the front cover of Railway Mag but why put metal pipe down one side of the running plate. Surely it would be better to hide it under the running plate out of view. This piping dose no favors for the looks of the loco. ](*,) ](*,)

In fact some of the the rebuilt engines did have that small piping run fitted to the outside of the vertical drop of the running plate, on the left-hand (drivers side) of the loco. However on photographs of the rebuilt Scots in service the piping disappears under the running plate infront of the piston-valve cover, rather than continuing down the angle of the framing as on the photo of 46115 in Railway Herald.
Anyone know what that pipe is for out of curiosity?

The pipe is electrical conduit for the AWS. It carries the cable from the receiver, which was mounted on the bogie, to the cab.

Moving away from this livery nonsense can somebody tell me what work was required on 46115 as I recall Pete Waterman saying she was in a very bad way when at Crewe.

Heavy application of green paint was all that was required (structual type)

I do not know the details of the actual work carried out, but one can assume that it has had a heavy general overhaul.

Whatever anyone says or thinks the return of 46115 to the mainline really is something we have all been waiting for and I think a very large thank you is due to David and all involved at WCRC

I for one can't wait to hear a Royal Scot climbing up Mallerstang and onto Ais Gill

Ok I will try again............What kind of work was involved in this overhaul? Was 46115 stripped right down to the frames as it was mentioned somewhere that they were cracked. She must have had one of the most comprehensive overhauls of recent times as she was taken out of action for being in a very poor state. I'm just interested in what's been done that's all.

Whilst it was still in the care of the bahamas Locomotive Society an article was written in Steam Railway which gave a very detailed and eloquent assessment of it's condition as it was known at that time

Iirc she ran on the main line with tubes from BR days. Following an incident with 6697 Boiler regs I believe changed and as a consequence she was withdrawn from Main Line Running have managed 3 tours in 1978 .

Her history became a little chequered after that and to see that picture on the Railway Herald , aaah Magic

I'm also sorry to say but I think she looks fantastic in LMs Black and hoping you'll indulge a little off topic but both a Princess and Jubilee would look rather special in Lined 1946 LMS Black

46115's steamings came to an end when a flue tube collapsed during a steaming at the Dinting Railway Centre.
Fortunately the incident did not, as far as I recall, cause further damage or any injuries.

Uncertain about the loco, but certainly members of the footplate crew were indeed injured as a result of the flue collapse, ask one Mr R.Preston for details..... #-o
