It has been suggested in the Industrial Loco thread that a group is formed for supporters and owners of Industrial Locos who wish to keep them true to their heritage, and hey presto.....

The Association of Real Industrial Steam Engines (ARISE)

All thoughts and ideas on aims and objectives please post here! (Sensible ones only please, well clean ones anyway!)

I propose that you rename the group the Association of Real Steam Engines, as the very presence of the word "real" should inform everyone that they are industrials.

Sneaky... although I must admit I keep mis-reading ARISE as 'A*SE'!

A good idea though to encourage respect for the history of each individual engine, hope it goes well!

Yes, but if the group were to be called the Association of Real Steam Engines, it would actually be A.R.S.E, so there you go

Following up the posts in the other discussion, here are some suggestions for the national ARISE Awards:

"GOLDEN PAINT BRUSH" award for best paint-job in authentic industrial livery

"DRIED-OUT PAINT BRUSH" award for dodgiest livery given to industrial:
    > eg NCB Austerities in BR livery
    > Barclay at East Somerset (http://www.eastsomersetrailway.com/stock.php?num=705)

"WELCOME BACK" award for mainline loco re-painted in industrial livery:
    > Pannier 3650 at Didcot (http://www.didcotrailwaycentre.org.uk/l ... /3650.html)

"BROKEN TEA CUP" award for most authentic driving while pulling a passenger train:
    > Darfield and Monckton at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Gala (I've read about them, but has anyone got photos to prove it?)

"STAINLESS STEEL SPANNER" award for best loco restoration

"BENT SPANNER" award for most extreme re-engineering of an industrial
    > Ivor the Engine (http://flickr.com/photos/98965954@N00/951227606)

"FURRY DICE" award for most best/worst gizmo to be fitted to an industrial
    > Electric lighting from steam-powered generator

"LOTTERY SCRATCH CARD" award for most optimistic restoration project
    > "Gervase" Sentinel ex Kent & East Sussex (http://jedwards.fotopic.net/c1574870.html)

Any more ideas and nominations please?

    Richard

The Legend Award: For outstanding achievements in the field of industrial preservation, whose knowledge is massive and there very presence inspires others. Or in other words the ones who get the job done and sees it to the end.

Brew of the year Award: As anyone in preservation knows a cup of tea is just what you need to solve a problem as it allows the group to brainstorm away from the project and this award goes to that special brand of tea.

The "I told you i'd do it!" Award : For the project that despite massive amounts of criticism is completed

Well, I would happily accept the award on behalf of the "Benevolent Benefactor". I am sure he'd be delighted to win an award, even though he shuns the limelight! However, I would have another nomination for the Broken Tea Cup award. On our May gala, our Austerity tank no25 "Northiam" deputised for our (rumoured to be ornamental) P class. One of her turns was to take 2 mk1's from Rolvenden to Tenterden, up the 1 in 36. While I wasn't there myself, I understand the noise and volcano of smoke was truly something to behold. I later spoke to the driver, who confirmed that he had given it "everything".... :smt119

"KEEP DIGGING" award for the largest number of shovels lost whilst firing an industrial.

"DAISY AWARD" for the receiver of the most bizarre request from a member of the public.

37255's signature says that he's already a "Member of ARISE". Quick work!!

So can anyone join? Or are their minimum standards (eg. must be able to identify a Manning Wardle slip eccentric from a range of 50 yards)? After all, we don't want any of these "big-engine" people joining in, do we? 8-[

As i said before i think a raised profile is desirable but wonder about the industrial loco society,Perhaps they should raise there game to accomodate some of the perceived requirements and asperations expressed here, at least that way the wealth of knowledge that they have unouobtably amassed would not be sidelined,

Those involved in aircraft preservation & restoration frequently speak to ex forces people when they hit a snag and report that "All problems are soluble in beer".

As a member of her majestys finest that I can say is still very true! Although most of the time you have to make do with tea as drinking on the job is frowned upon..... you might spill it!

We could do the meeting at Tanfield in Feb then we can prepare for an awards at the Foxfield gala?

Who wants to stand as chair?

I'm more than prepared to act in a PR role if everyone was to want that.
